Critics Consensus

Diamonds are Forever is a largely derivative affair, but it's still pretty entertaining nonetheless, thanks to great stunts, witty dialogue, and the presence of Sean Connery.

Ben Kern Minneapolis Star Tribune Best mechanical gimmick mayhem in town. May 16, 2023 Full Review Jay Cocks TIME Magazine Bond looks better than ever, partly because Sean Connery has returned to play him. Oct 13, 2008 Full Review Ian Nathan Empire Magazine Connery has a ball with great stunts, snappy dialogue and a bevy of typically Bondish beauties. Rated: 3/5 Apr 24, 2008 Full Review John Hofsess Maclean's Magazine Only the British apparently (judging by dozens of unfortunate imitations) can make a crude sex-and-violence formula yield such refined, exhilarating entertainment as this. Oct 24, 2023 Full Review Carson Timar ButteredPopcorn With a sense of lifelessness, Diamonds Are Forever easily is the most boring Bond film. Charles Not as good as You Only Live Twice, but it’s just as witty and action packed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/13/22 Full Review Martin E In my opinion by far best of the early Bond films. Charles Gray for me, so far, reaches the culmination of 'villains' as one of Shakesperian acting capability in a quitely powerful, understated way. I am not an enthusiast or fan of royal patronage, however this gentleman ought to receive a posthumous knighthood for his contribution to the British entertainment stage. The reverse is applicable to most politicians! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/02/24 Full Review Lucas t Very funny action comedy. 7.9/10. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review DanTheMan 2 Diamonds Are Forever has always been a more interesting what-if than a real film to me, its production history is far more fascinating than the final product. A clear attempt at recreating what had made Goldfinger work, but after Lazenby walked and Roger busy filming The Persuaders, the entire film flounders around wasting everyone's time, almost as if it was done to tie the audience over till the next leading man had been found. It's a complete mess, simple as. Breezing over the previous film's gut-wrenching ending without as much as a passing thought, instead offering a redundant, dull and brutally mundane diamond-smuggling melodrama without the spectacle we associate with James Bond. Guy Hamilton's direction is a far cry from his high points, as lazy as Connery's one-note performance in a role he so easily made his just shy of a decade prior. He's just going through the motions and looks to have aged horribly in the time away from 007, while the remaining cast is just as bad although Charles Gray does admittedly commit to the bit, he's just not cut out for the role of Blofeld. Even with John Barry turning in another fine score, seeming like he's the only one trying, Diamonds Are Forever doesn't have the same quality or flair we've seen previously ending up as a nonsensical, undeveloped and completely lifeless bore. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review alan g Only redeeming qualities are the Bond girls. Jill St John and Lana Woods have the best parts literally. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review James B It's hardly the spectacle that the Bond films of the 60s were, but Connery's return keeps things watchable and, at times, even exciting.
