Marie Asner Phantom Tollbooth A somber film turns into something entirely different. Rated: 3/5 Jul 29, 2022 Full Review Q.V. Hough Vague Visages “‘Diary of a Spy’ mostly keeps viewers in the dark; it’s unclear what makes the main characters tick. Anna and Camden are Dostoevskian figures in spirit, from a different tale, who seem lost in time.” Jul 28, 2022 Full Review Tim Brennan About Boulder At its core, Diary of a Spy is a genre film. It’s a spy film showing us situations and people we’ve seen before, and that’s pretty much it. I never got the sense of either new ground being broken or of high-level screenwriting craft at play. Jul 22, 2022 Full Review Anne Brodie What She Said Gripping and wildly improbable, it’s not your standard romance by any means, a truly unique and unfamiliar universe and it happened IRL. Jul 19, 2022 Full Review Shelagh Rowan-Legg ScreenAnarchy Diary of a Spy takes us into this dark, dangerous world via a often neglected side door, probing this story with observations on human vulnerabiltiy and the price of exploiting it. Jul 18, 2022 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed Diary of a Spy is a decent drama with a great lead performance by Tamara Taylor. This is a film viewers will need to be in the mood for or it will not work... Rated: 3/5 Jul 13, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

DH I have seen the lead actress (Tamara Taylor) in TV shows (Bones, etc) and found her to be very talented. So I wanted to see her performance in Diary of a Spy. This is an art movie so it won't appeal to a wide audience. I had to watch it twice before I understood all of the nuances. Initially I found the dark lighting to be distracting. But when I thought about the fact that Taylor's character Anna was a spy, it made more sense. She really did a good job portraying someone who had skills as a spy but now was defeated, tired, and despondent. She drank and smoked so much you could feel the pain. I have to admit- Anna's interactions with Camden (Reese Noi) seemed a bit far fetched given the age difference even after her following him for weeks. Would they really hang out together just like that? I don't know. The ending was a complete surprise which was good for a spy movie. If you can tolerate the dark lighting and plot twists and turns, it's actually a pretty good movie. You'll probably have to watch it twice though Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
