Calum Marsh New York Times It’s the sort of bland, innocuous trifle that will swiftly recede into the oblivion of a streaming service menu — a comedy without laughs and a family movie without heart, lacking any of the wit or charm of Kinney’s original stories. Dec 2, 2022 Full Review Rachel Wagner Rachel's Reviews (YouTube) I hate this animation and Rodrick does not rule Dec 31, 2022 Full Review Mat Brunet AniMat's Review (YouTube) Everything about it feels like it just barely passes as an animated movie...but even at that, not everything would actually go and pass. Rated: 4/10 Dec 22, 2022 Full Review Jennifer Green Common Sense Media With basic sketches for characters, this series installment remains faithful to the popular original comic in style and substance, but it's missing some of its heart. Rated: 3/5 Dec 7, 2022 Full Review Charles Solomon FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) [The characters] are not particularly attractive and don't allow for much expression in the animation... as a result, the film is very, very talky. Dec 6, 2022 Full Review Kevin Carr Fat Guys at the Movies More true to the book’s style than the live-action version, this is a cute film but can have a reasonable parent frustrated with its overall messaging. Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 3, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

r96 s They just keep making these, eh? Not good when one is somewhat of a completionist when it comes to franchises. 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules' is at least a minor improvement on the original animated flick from a year prior. The run time is nice and short so doesn't really overly stay its welcome, naturally (given I'm obviously not the target audience etc.) it was a bit boring throughtout for me. I can still acknowledge it's a relatively OK film, though. The voice cast aren't anything worth shouting from the rooftops about, perhaps with the exception of a certain Ed Asner. It shows how the live-action films from this series actually did do a good job with its casting, because I still always associate the characters here to Zachary Gordon & Co. - despite only seeing those movies once or twice. I'm split on the animation style. On the one hand it looks dull, yet kinda still works. I remember the 2021 release had some overt continuity issues onscreen, as well as a few audio problems. This one doesn't, at least none of which I noticed, so that's a plus point, I guess! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review Joshua P Holy moly. What a displeasure it is to have a working set of eyeballs. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Mason V what in the world disney? this movie was OK, why couldn't they stick with the real life movies? Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Evan H It's better than the original but the best part was when we all got rickrolled I was not expecting that it was cool overall, 76/100 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/24 Full Review Mike M 5.9/10 I was looking forward to Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2022) after seeing its runtime hit the 1 hour mark. But, this still isn't the animated Diary of a Wimpy Kid series we were waiting for. I definitely liked this more than the first animated adaptation, it had more of the story from the book, but it is still a very mediocre adaptation. In this film, I don't feel like it adapted Greg and Rodrick's brotherly relationship as well as the live-action film. Everything about their relationship just doesn’t mix up here. Speaking of Greg and Rodrick, the roles do not fit their character, the two brothers both sound the same age. I'm still not a fan of the CGI animation choice, and the jokes weren't funny. Sadly, even Greg’s Rickroll couldn’t save the film. All in all, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2022) is a mediocre sequel that does a better job adapting than the first animated film, but still fails in multiple parts. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review Gorptholemew T 🍀 2.9/10 A tiny bit better than the first but that's not really saying much.
