What to Know

Critics Consensus

A semi-autobiographical love letter to teenage angst that's also slyly self-critical, Dìdi is a deeply moving personal statement by writer-director Sean Wang.

Wang presents it all without leaning into sentimentality, a reassuringly-embarrassing reminder of how messy it is to be a teen. Go to Full Review

A gutshot coming-of-age story aimed directly at those former teenagers who weathered the great transition from MySpace to Facebook, Dìdi is almost more painful than poignant. Go to Full Review

"Dìdi is not just a film about the past; it is a call to confront how the traces of our personal history continue to shape who we are, even when time threatens to erase them." [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

There’s a refreshing honesty and, possibly, a particular boyishness, to a story of an artist discovering his medium not due to the purity of his innermost compulsions but just because he’s trying to be seen as cool. Go to Full Review

Eric 10/31/2024 I finally watched Dìdi, and it’s nothing short of a masterpiece. It beautifully captures the significance of a nickname that has been an integral part of my identity—a name my family has always called me. As some people in the past have struggled to understand this nickname's importance, occasionally even making light of it, this film profoundly underscores its deep cultural and generational meaning. It brought back many memories of my younger years. Although I have some differences with how the film portrays certain aspects, that final scene with Joan Chen reflects a bond similar to the one I share with my mom. While my sister’s generation may connect most with the nostalgic details of Myspace and AIM, having grown up in the 2000s, the film’s coming-of-age narrative still resonates deeply with many Asian Americans, especially those with Taiwanese heritage. Sean Wang has created a piece of art that made me feel truly seen. See more FredoTej 10/07/2024 Pilipino American Boomer, but this was totally relatable! Nicely done! See more Donald F 10/05/2024 Coming of age, family still deep in Asian culture, kid makes videos of skateboarders and finds a place for himself in the world outside his culture of origin. Realistic for a teen living in the era of internet See more Teresa 09/20/2024 Relatable movie but boring at parts. Ending was open ended so I didn't really like that.
