What to Know

Critics Consensus

A semi-autobiographical love letter to teenage angst that's also slyly self-critical, Dìdi is a deeply moving personal statement by writer-director Sean Wang.

Jacob Oller AV Club A gutshot coming-of-age story aimed directly at those former teenagers who weathered the great transition from MySpace to Facebook, Dìdi is almost more painful than poignant. Rated: B- Oct 25, 2024 Full Review Christina Newland iNews.co.uk Sean Wang's debut film is an overwhelmingly moving portrait of teenage angst and ennui. Rated: 4/5 Sep 17, 2024 Full Review Olly Richards Time Out Wang treats them all with gentle understanding and sympathy. His cast are superb, especially Izaac Wang, authentically stroppy and bruised, and Chen as his mother, who feels just as rudderless as her son. Rated: 4/5 Sep 11, 2024 Full Review Matt Donato Matt Donato (Authory) Sean Wang's painstaking recreation of the 2000s teenage experience is picture-perfect. Rated: 4.5/5 Dec 3, 2024 Full Review Tina Kakadelis Beyond the Cinerama Dome Dìdi extends a warmth and kindness to the lost, angry, and hopeful teen we all once were. Eric I finally watched Dìdi, and it’s nothing short of a masterpiece. It beautifully captures the significance of a nickname that has been an integral part of my identity—a name my family has always called me. As some people in the past have struggled to understand this nickname's importance, occasionally even making light of it, this film profoundly underscores its deep cultural and generational meaning. It brought back many memories of my younger years. Although I have some differences with how the film portrays certain aspects, that final scene with Joan Chen reflects a bond similar to the one I share with my mom. While my sister’s generation may connect most with the nostalgic details of Myspace and AIM, having grown up in the 2000s, the film’s coming-of-age narrative still resonates deeply with many Asian Americans, especially those with Taiwanese heritage. Sean Wang has created a piece of art that made me feel truly seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/31/24 Full Review FredoTej Pilipino American Boomer, but this was totally relatable! Nicely done! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/07/24 Full Review Donald F Coming of age, family still deep in Asian culture, kid makes videos of skateboarders and finds a place for himself in the world outside his culture of origin. Realistic for a teen living in the era of internet Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Teresa Relatable movie but boring at parts. Ending was open ended so I didn't really like that. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review JS Pure nostalgia for millennials Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review Isabel very relatable to asian americans and gives perspectives to different family roles (sister, brother, mother) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
