      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Its action may be bit too over-the-top for some, but Die Another Day is lavishly crafted and succeeds in evoking classic Bond themes from the franchise's earlier installments.

Frank Ingenius throughout. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/26/22 Full Review Bruce W After reading these reviews I've come to the conclusion that you just don't understand. A bond film is a bond film. Almost all bond movies are great besides the one Sean Connery film where he came back with another studio making it and the two Timothy Dalton movies. Every other bond film does what a bond film does best. Die another day is a 2000s pierce Brosnan finale with HALLE BERRY as the Bond girl. The romance, the action, the story. One of my favorite bond movies out of the whole. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/24 Full Review Adi 1 Die another day is one of the weakest in the bond franchise for a number of reasons. First off it has a weird start with bond being tortured and a catchy dance number playing in the background. It has used CGI in most of its action scenes and it doesn't age well. Overall, the film appears to be a little cartoonish and for the most part bland. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Rami A It's a pretty weak Bond film. Nothing overly exciting, but still has great entertainment. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Audience Member At the time this was James Bond's 4 decade milestone The film being officially over 20 years old now; I remember seeing it with my late dad opening weekend I didn't hate it and it made $431.9 million but I understood why it was so clumsy celebrating the 40th anniversary of the franchise at the time Pierce Brosnan returns for his 5th and final outing as James Bond 007 A mission goes awry in North Korea and he ends up imprisoned and tortured for 14 months His freedom costs releasing an adversary named Zao blowing up a summit in the country for fear of nuclear war Bond is back working for MI6 but it'll be difficult getting back into the swing of things after M almost threw him away He manages to track down Zao in Cuba at a clinic dealing with gene therapy while also running into fellow CIA agent Jinx Then the mission takes them to Greenland meeting a man named Gustav Graves, who amassed his fortune with rocks that resemble African conflict diamonds Bond also encounters his assistant Miranda Frost but she's not all she seems It's up to Bond to stop him from destroying the sanctity of the boundary between North and South Korea The movie while harmless and easy to watch ends up suffering some stuff I didn't notice at the time Yet there are elements that work: fun action set pieces particularly the feud between Bond and Gustav Graves, love Halle Berry as Jinx, Rick Yune as the diamond faced Zao, and this was my first introduction to Rosamund Pike Judi Dench is still my favorite as M The bits of the film that do work are unfortunately marred by a ham-fisted script that relentlessly attempts a Roger Moore degree of wordplay There is no pun or sexual innuendo too shameful for screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade Even as an ode to the arch manner of Bonds-passed, there seemed to be little discrimination in which lines would be cut The theme song by Madonna is way too overproduced mixing in techno and synthesizer vocals Can't help but notice that lack of cohesion between the dialogue, tonal shifts, and disastrous special effects is greatly director Lee Tamahori’s fault but Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson need to share in that blame Moore even publicly stated that he hated this film for all its ridiculousness Heck it was controversial in the Korean Peninsula and The North Korean government disliked the portrayal of their state as brutal and war-hungry It almost killed the franchise to embarrassing degrees to the point of self parody Lots of ludicrous stuff from invisible cars to laser beams Yet this is a notable Bond film for several reasons; Principal of which was due to the world-changing event that took place during its production 9/11 upended the Western world and, in turn, what they expected from their entertainment The classic Bond villain was no longer a believable threat to the world Existential danger was more palpable, more real Broccoli and Wilson understood this and decided to pursue a completely different path for Ian Fleming’s world-famous spy The movie made Pierce Brosnan the only Bond to be let go from the role but also ultimately brought us, Daniel Craig, as the gritty rebooted agent and the greatest Bond we’ve got Thank god the series got rebooted and Skyfall did a better job celebrating its 50th at the time and also closing out the newer films with No Time to Die while honoring the legacy with more subtlety and respect It's scary this could've ended the franchise so easily but we can be grateful the filmmakers started over from scratch after a mixed bag like 'Die Another Day' Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/22/23 Full Review James A Viewers tend to be very negative about Brosnan's post-GoldenEye run. I suspect that has a lot to do with how his tenure ended, particularly with the final hour of this film. Die Another Day's back half is definitely a low-point for the 007 franchise. But the first half? Well, it's not very good... but it's also not terrible. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com It's definitely [Pierce] Brosnan's worst Bond film. Rated: D+ Apr 3, 2020 Full Review Namrata Joshi Outlook The film is a frantic roller-coaster ride from which you emerge exhausted, with a massive blur in the head. Rated: 2/4 Jan 3, 2019 Full Review Peter Rainer New York Magazine/Vulture It's the same old Bond. Nov 2, 2015 Full Review Kent M. Wilhelm Tilt Magazine Producing this milestone film is an unenviable task of immense responsibility. Unfortunately, the result is a clumsy homage –an attempt to concoct a grand confection with ingredients of varied quality and a baker that wasn’t up to the task. Jul 21, 2023 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies It really doesn't matter how Lee Tamahori directed the film or what Neal Purvis and Robert Wade did with their script  because Die Another Day was screwed from the moment that The Bourne Identity opened in theaters. Rated: 2.5/5 Dec 19, 2022 Full Review Mitchell Beaupre Paste Magazine Despite the invisible car, the atrocious theme song, the bewildering Madonna cameo and Toby Stephens’ dreadfully dull villain, there is one thing about Die Another Day that proves to be an inarguable success: Halle Berry.
