Critics Consensus

Die Hard with a Vengeance benefits from Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson's barbed interplay, but clatters to a bombastic finish in a vain effort to cover for an overall lack of fresh ideas.

Barbara Creed The Age (Australia) If you are an action fan you will love Die Hard With A Vengeance. All you need is a strong stomach and a penchant for masochism. If you can endure the pain threshhold, you won't mind the glaring plot inconsistencies, woeful stereotyping and banal story. Nov 18, 2022 Full Review David Hinckley New York Daily News Samuel L. Ralph R Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) is a step up from the second movie but still does not capture what made the first one great. The plot skips any buildup and throws McClane straight into a city-wide puzzle game, which keeps the pace fast but makes everything feel more scripted than natural. Instead of building tension, the movie rushes from one scenario to the next, making it feel like the characters are just following a trail without questioning anything. The script has some great banter, especially between Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, whose dynamic carries a lot of the movie. But the overall story feels more like a structured game than an unpredictable survival situation, which takes away from the suspense. John McTiernan’s directing is solid, and the cinematography makes good use of the New York setting, but the action never feels as intense as it should. Jeremy Irons as the villain is decent, but he lacks the presence and impact of Hans Gruber, making the conflict feel less personal. The score and sound design keep the energy up, but they do not add much beyond standard action beats. While this is the better sequel, it still lacks the raw tension and creativity that made Die Hard a classic. It is fun, but it feels like a well-organized maze rather than a high-stakes battle for survival. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Emil P Not as good as the first Die Hard but not bad. If you like action, you will probably like this. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/25 Full Review David S This movie is an action-packed comedy blast Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson play off each other perfectly the chemistry between the two is awesome this third installment of the Die Hard series is awesome. Jeremy Irons is great as the villain Simon Gruber the brother of Hans Gruber from the first movie. He did a great job. Bruce Willis makes these movies awesome if it was not for him I don't think they would be as good unless, of course, they had Liam Neeson play John McClane All in all, it's a great movie. This movie's action, acting, comedy, stunts, directing, and music are great. If you have not seen this movie then I recommend you do Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Mr. Beans R The third movie of what was not to be a trilogy, better than part two a good watch it should have ended with this one. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Brady R The movie is still a very well-made action flick, that I could recommend even to people who haven't watched the first film Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Jonathan H Probably my second-favorite Die Hard film, after the first one. I love the chemistry between Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson. It's something special in this film, absolutely. This is better than any "buddy cop" movie out there, and they certainly are not really buddies throughout this one. Great action, stunt work, acting and a decent story. It almost gets 5 stars from me, but not quite. Irons is good as the villain but I feel he could have been great. Some of the tail end comes off as a little campy; the first two acts are definitely far superior to the third in this movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews
