20 years ago, Sundance was rocked by DIG!, Ondi Timoner's genre-topping rockumentary about two Gen-X bands and their journey to alt-rock glory. Shot over nearly a decade, DIG! explores the collision of art and commerce through the star-crossed friendship and bitter rivalry of dueling 90s bands The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Through their loves and obsessions, gigs, arrests and death threats, uppers and downers, and ultimately to their shot at mainstream success, they stage a self-proclaimed revolution in the music industry. DIG! XX -- a bigger, better, crazier expanded reimagining of the original cut -- reminds us why the original is canon and why sometimes, more is better.

David Jenkins Little White Lies This 20th anniversary refit/remaster of 2004’s cult rock-shock-doc Dig! proves that no amount of inadvisable retroactive tinkering can diminish the quality of a core product that’s this good. Rated: 3/5 Mar 24, 2025 Full Review Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's about what it is to try and make art in a corporate world, and you start empathizing with the stubbornness it takes to keep going. Feb 11, 2025 Full Review Sara Stewart Book & Film Globe DIG XX is, more now than ever in its XXtreme form, one of the best music documentaries. Rated: 4/5 Feb 2, 2024 Full Review Robert Ham The Stranger (Seattle, WA) Outside of an eye-roll-inducing intro from Dave Grohl, the fresh material is fantastic, adding extra layers of hilarity and melancholy to the tale. Jan 24, 2025 Full Review Dolores Quintana Santa Monica Mirror DIG! XX is magnificent and fiery, an artistic telling of a story that is frequently misunderstood because of our society’s tendency to put a premium on obedience rather than free will, even in art. Apr 24, 2024 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills Differing measures of commercial success, drug addiction, personality conflicts, and so forth conspired to gradually turn these separate camps of besties into enemies. Shay It was great the first time round too Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/25 Full Review Jack S The original is a classic that introduced me to one of my favorite bands of all-time in the BJM. The unseen footage is a very welcome addition. But why, why, why, why, why, why would they use this lazy AI upscaling? It looks horrendous and half the film looks like cartoon characters now. Damn shame to sully such a modern masterpiece. Anton has to hate this thing even more now. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/12/25 Full Review Rob H Angst and anger masquerading as "substance." The unpopular kid at school who brooded about how "unfair" it is that no one "gets him", ignoring the obvious... that he's rude and self-absorbed and shows no real concern for anyone but himself. Dig! is like the album you bought when you were 15 to rebel, only to stop listening to it because there was nothing "there." For those who disagree, and suggest the film is a harsh critque on artless music business, the fact that middle aged corporate critics (who trade their souls for "clicks and likes") rave about it is a pretty strong message.
