      Critics Consensus

Well-acted and solidly crafted, Disorder (Maryland) relies on patiently established slow-burning tension to set the stage for an intelligent, intimate psychological thriller.

Audience Member Fantastic movie! Interesting choice of music using Gesaffelstein. Really adds to the disturbing quality of the film. We need more female action directors. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Matthias Schoenaerts plays a similar character in Disorder to the one he played in Rust and Bone - quiet, troubled, physically courageous, and violent. His performance is solid, and the film is too, despite some holes. There are times when characters' behaviour simply doesn't fit the situation. Most notably, when Vincent (Schoenaerts) calls a friend for help yet seemingly fails to tell him of the dramatic events that triggered the call. And there's a continuity problem too - in the first of a pair of scenes it's raining heavily of an afternoon, but in the second scene of the pair, later that night, there's no water on the leaves of the trees in the vicinity. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member I like the personality of Schoenaerts. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Disorder has little dialogue and can be slow at times but Matthias Schoenaerts' performance as Vincent was great. It does pick up near the last half and the characters Winocour makes are quite interesting. Where it lacked was for a thriller it was maybe little too slow but it nailed Vincent's paranoia and his mental and physical pains. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Wincour creates a unique world of vibrancy, dark shadows and original use of contemporary music, and Schoenaerts and Kruger both are typically strong but the psychological aspect of the script gets too out of touch with reality Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review waleed a completely useless. super boring. nothing happens. and then when it does, it's underwhelming and.... completely useless. Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post The movie is at its best when it recreates what it must feel like to be in a constant state of paranoia and pain. If only that feeling were accompanied by one or two other emotions. Rated: 2/4 Sep 1, 2016 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com It all allows the film to have an eerie, old school noir aesthetic that's reminiscent of Fritz Lang coupled with the psychologically destructive emotional pathos of Claude Chabrol. Yet Winocour manages to make things feel unique. Rated: 3/4 Aug 25, 2016 Full Review Randy Cordova Arizona Republic Ambiguity permeates almost every scene in new suspense film "Disorder." That sounds like it could be maddening. Here, the result is darkly compelling ... Rated: 4/5 Aug 25, 2016 Full Review Jordan Brooks Vague Visages It is rare for a film to look objectively at war’s after effects and the violence it instills on its participants, and yet Alice Winocour’s Disorder is not concerned with pity or ferocity. Aug 1, 2023 Full Review Jason Adams My New Plaid Pants This is the best Schoenaerts has been since Bullhead ... his paranoia consumes all and Wincour's camera swirls... stretching the tension well past bearable up to something kind of exquisite Jan 10, 2022 Full Review Allen Almachar The MacGuffin Schoenaerts has a knack for amplifying his presence to appear larger within a scene. He fills the character of Vincent like a man made of stone. Rated: B+ Jul 11, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
