Audience Member An older ethnographic documentary like this offers layers of information: The photographic documentation of the lives and practices of the people being filmed. The choices made by the filmmaker(s) about what to show and how to show it. The narration or commentary which can offer insight into the people and society being documented; but just as much into the perspectives and attitudes of the commentators and their society. The reaction of the modern day audience to the images and the commentary which offers insight into changing attitudes. This film offers pretty rich material for exploring all those aspects. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member This has to be one of the best documentaries I've seen to date on Voudoun. I can't believe this movie was so beautifully shot so long ago with such an open mind and understanding. I loved it. If you are looking for a how-to-guide to voodoo, then this is not the film for you. Also, if you are looking to be freaked out or scared, this is not for you. This is a true anthropological documentary that removes all stereotypes and myths to show the real religion. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This was Maya Deren's first documentary and the las thing she filmed before her death. The movie itself wasn't actually finished until several years after her death Teiji Uto. It's filmed in Haiti and is about the voudoun faith of some of the local people. Personally I wanted to like this one, but I must admit that I was rather bored with this one. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
