      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Doc Hollywood isn't particularly graceful in its attempt to put a '90s spin on its Capraesque formula, but a light touch and a charming cast make its flaws easy to forgive.

Pillow R A rip-off of Pixar's movie Cars. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/27/24 Full Review Sherri L When you want to watch something where so don't have to do a lot of thinking (need some down time) and appreciate the calmer, simpler things in life, this is it. The cast of characters are cool and it's just a fun relaxing movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Nawt W Within the idealized portrayal of the American countryside lies a solid plot with a seemingly straightforward choice that the main character has to make: money or love. I can't say that Michael J. Fox wholeheartedly sells his role, and most of his vexation comes off as very overacted. Everyone else is, however, splendid, which makes Ben Stone's shortcomings as a believable character more palatable due to the supporting cast. Not that the movie is trying to be all that truthful; it is a sweet romantic comedy about a guy and girl who can't be together due to circumstances, only to get together in the end after all. What stands out (aside from Burwell's soundtrack) here is the naive fascination with rural Americana that really boils down to: small rural towns: good; megapolis: bad. Even though distinctions are barely outlined and seem superficial, if not for Lou, Ben would have left a long time ago. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/03/23 Full Review Detroit A It's a cheesy movie, but I love it. I love the Grady country feel. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review john m A pretty cliche, hokey movie. Takes the city boy in a small bumfuck town premise about as typical as you would expect for a 90s movie. Although I'm always glad to see Woody. He shines in everything. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Matthew D Predictable but charming--and often very funny. Peter Rainer Los Angeles Times The whole sunny production is like Frank Capra with a lobotomy. Jun 24, 2021 Full Review Eleanor Ringel Cater Atlanta Journal-Constitution There's nothing startling here, nothing flashy, nothing complex. Just the solid, old-fashioned pleasure of watching an expert cast carry out a well-crafted story that celebrates the virtues of life off the fast track. Jun 24, 2021 Full Review Michael H. Price Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com Fox and Julie Warner strike a compelling chemistry despite the relationship's predictability. Rated: 6/10 Jun 24, 2021 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Doc Hollywood isn't that bad, because Michael J. Fox is really good. [Full review in Spanish] Aug 2, 2023 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation It may have been lightly regarded when it came out, but I think you can make the case that "Doc Hollywood," a throwback comedy even then, stands the test of time better than most any rom-com of its era.
