While Besson, Landry Jones, and a pack of mutts lend DogMan their roaring souls, this entry offers ample creative risks and kibbled returns.

Stephanie Zacharek TIME Magazine This is the perfect movie for those days you’re convinced that dogs are better than people—even if that’s every day. Jun 4, 2024 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (LAist) [Caleb Landry Jones] is astounding in this role, so you sit there completely engaged in this film where there is not a single believable moment in it. Apr 5, 2024 Full Review Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (LAist) I wouldn't recommend watching DogMan for its half-baked rumination on god or forgiveness... But I would recommend watching this if you are curious to see how far Caleb Landry Jones is willing to go. Apr 5, 2024 Full Review Philip Bagnall Loud and Clear Reviews Despite a terrific lead turn from Caleb Landry Jones, Luc Besson’s stylish drama/thriller Dogman just isn’t original enough to be memorable. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 19, 2024 Full Review Jesús Palacios Fotogramas A baroque comicstrip superhero who is also a supervillain, 'Dogman' is a beast that does not know or respect norms, genres or styles. Jill V C Very original and well done… I loved it! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review dom s original crazy tragic dark twisted sweet. it’s a lovely movie by luc besson. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Texas713 Great movie a very good storyline. We enjoyed it very much. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Glossoc C 59% to 83% — that’s a big difference between critics and the audience rating. Here’s why. Professional critics judge primarily by how much money a movie will make. Money-makers get good reviews. Crummy movies that don't make money get bad reviews. However, if it’s a good movie, but critics know it will not make a lot of money, they’re more likely to give it a bad review. That’s their job. That’s what’s going on here. Critics know the average movie goer will not like this movie. Why? DogMan breaks a lot of rules. It shows religious people as whack jobs. It’s slow in places. It depicts a man justifying psychopathic behavior with childhood abuse. And worse, it shows how guns really work. There’s an unwritten rule in movies that no matter the caliber of the gun, if you are behind a wall or door, you are safe. DogMan shows guns shooting through brick walls and steel doors. Something they can indeed do. But is absolutely, unequivocally forbidden to show in movies because… I don’t know why. Perhaps because most Hollywood directors don’t grow up shooting guns? Another unwritten rule is that money-maker movies can go full stupid. The most popular superhero movies show characters making ridiculous choices. Action suspense movies usually add up to dull and implausible. But most audiences can shut that stuff out as long as there is enough special effects and glib humor. Also, superhero movies must show a bad world with a good guy who somehow — impossibly — cleans it up. So, yes, this movie is part musical, part horror, part insane musings. Yes, it has some implausible bits. But it is a great film, a superhero movie whose protagonist has few redeeming qualities. A brutal film for a brutal world. Watch it if you believe film is an art form and not just a cash cow. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/07/25 Full Review D3m0n1k K As someone who has willingly chosen to isolate himself from society and live in solitude with my dog for various reasons that run parallel to this film, my opinion may be seen as biased and skewed. That being said, I still believe this film is an amazing and sometimes brutal dissection of trauma, mental illness, loneliness, and vengeance. The lead character MAKES you sympathize with him and even when his statements are obviously based in psychosis or simple hatred you find yourself thinking "Yeah, but he's right." I got Longlegs vibes with some Silence Of The Lambs thrown in but the film doesn't stray into the fantastical. It's pretty grounded but some may feel uncomfortable because it stays grounded in a pretty dark and unpleasant place. This was going to be simple time passer to watch just because. It became a thought provoking and emotionally stimulating experience that continued to affect me long after it was over. This is a masterpiece and well worth your time. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/25 Full Review Steve C Best film in ages. Lot of entertainment and an unusual amount of depth. Great production values, superb acting, and just a crazy story.
