Jason P Scarlett Johansson is absolutely the bombshell she is. Wowza. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/23 Full Review Audience Member 10 years old and quite a remarkable debut by first time director-actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt. So many addictions exist in the world we consume but pornography is one of the biggest. It makes sense because well it sells, makes money, appeals to so many people with certain interests, and it’s unavoidable thanks to the power of the Internet. Levitt stars and co-stars with Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson, plays Don Jon; he’s a young man who dates so many women next to having physical relationships with them. But the one thing he can’t break away from is his computer to which he consumes so much adult content. Whether it’s pictures, movies, music videos etc. Don feels good but he struggles to actually find a human connection that is until he meets Barbara. But is she good for him? The movie seems to show that she has her own agenda telling Don what to do. She’s a looker but perhaps not the best fit for him. The film is sharp, colorful, funny, and even takes a jab at romantic comedies with their tired formulas Don saying how fake they are. Not to mention how modern romances dissolve. It’s now all about insecurities and the expectations we have. It also says a lot about an issue that exists for many that’s hard to break away from. What does constitute healthy sexuality? There shouldn’t be one person who doesn’t have to do all the work in a relationship or be in total control. Nothing can replace true intimacy. The movie is a hard look at the effects of male narcissism and how disappointing and lonely things can be. Levitt is excellent playing a man that sticks to a ritual part of his daily lifestyle and Johansson is amazing as this woman trying to change him. Both of them live in their own fantasy world thinking love should go a certain way. This is super funny covering someone’s addiction to something artificial. It’s like drinking or drugs but porn itself can be just as toxic. There is such a thing as reality outside of what we like to enjoy solo. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/27/23 Full Review Timothy D Don Jon makes a good case against the personal pitfalls that can ruin a relationship and leave someone unsatisfied. I especially appreciate the balance between the male and female perspective, especially for a movie about a man. This is an exploration of sex and what satisfies the heart vs the body. Simple but valid. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/28/23 Full Review Emilliano Jr S I thought I was watching American Pie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/16/23 Full Review Erik Z Don Jon is a refreshingly honest and thought-provoking exploration of modern relationships and societal expectations. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut, combined with his engaging performance, delivers a compelling and humorous take on the complexities of love, addiction, and personal growth, making it a great film that resonates with audiences on a deeper level. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/24/23 Full Review Gareth v A clever movie that takes on the culture of toxic masculinity. An assured debut as director for Gordon-Levitt.
