      Critics Consensus

John Cho and Mia Isaac are an appealing pair of leads, but Don't Make Me Go is one road trip movie that follows an overly familiar path.

Audience Member Kinda caught me off guard and sad ngl 3.8 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/12/23 Full Review Detective T If you want a bittersweet movie about a father and his daughter going on road trip to find the daughter's mother. This movie is for you, but I would say the ending will infact piss you off, because it literally comes out of nowhere. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/06/23 Full Review Benjamin J Don't make me go has very familiar tropes to the road-trip movie. And now the sub-genre of last wish of dead/dying relative, added into the mix. I enjoy Hannah Marks' films, and after watching this, probably because of her writing as well as her direction. I think Hannah was handed something very formulaic and she took the easy route with the material. The movie is elevated because of the lead actors and their commitment to their roles. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/31/22 Full Review Steve C It was standard fayre road movie until the twist that seems to divide the critics. The twist made it less comfortable, but more memorable/impactful as a movie. The leads have good chemistry and despite some trite and frustrating script in places, they are easy to connect with, which helps deliver the emotional pay-off, such as it is. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/22 Full Review ian r Don't Make Me Go is okay. I didn't expect the twist. I'm not sure I liked the twist. It's not a film I'll rewatch. Midnight Sun (Bella Thorn one) covers the same ground much better. It'll give your eyeballs a good wash. Don't Make Me Go probably won't. It didn't for me. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review tripti g Wow that really was a journey! Loved John Cho in 'Searching' and he was great in this too. Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) John Cho is wonderful, but Mia Isaac is just excellent in this movie. Jul 22, 2022 Full Review Sarah-Tai Black Los Angeles Times There is a line between narrative comfort and lack of imagination and, unfortunately, “Don’t Make Me Go” too frequently occupies the latter space. Jul 15, 2022 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com It's easy to take the ride with Max and Wally because of the two performers who bring them to life. Rated: 3/4 Jul 15, 2022 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan What makes Don’t Make Me Go an incredible drama is how it shows the challenges of emotional confrontation and how it is difficult to fulfil a parent’s fantasy for their child. Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Rebecca Johnson Film Focus Online The script doesn't do much different to what we're used to, but the killer soundtrack and likeable characters elevate it to a higher level. Rated: 3/5 Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Tina Kakadelis Beyond the Cinerama Dome Don’t Make Me Go's sensationalist ending feels like tragedy for the sake of tragedy instead of the more refined journey that brought the audience to this destination.
