      Critics Consensus

Shrill and unfunny, Hot Pursuit bungles what should have been an easy opportunity to showcase Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara's likable odd-couple chemistry. Read critic reviews

Wow, harsh! Well the cop and crook on the run plot is well worn, there is a neat Little twist that shakes things up. Although her character is written too straight-laced, Reese Witherspoon is a funny comedienne and a good sport taking a lot of shots about her height, or rather a lack of it, as well as boyish looks and conservative underwear. Sophia Vergara plays bitchy very well, although alternates between comedic and abrasive. There are several funny scenes, like a lively hotel room wrestling match, Reese's machinegun yammering after accidentally inhaling coke, a so-stupid-it's-funny attempt to convince a man they are lovers, and Reese in drag "crushing it as a dude" while managing to sustain the energy throughout. My funnybone got its money's worth.

First things first, the movie gets the rating it does simply because of the fact that Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon have a solid enough chemistry and rapport with each other than they, at the very least, are somewhat able to attempt to polish a turd.  And I do mean attempt, because with material this bad, a shiny turd is still a turd regardless of what you put on top of it.  Look, at the very least, to me, this movie is slightly better than a movie like Hot Tub Time Machine 2, a terrible movie.  What I mean by that is the fact that Hot Tub 2 was a sketch film barely held together by narrative threads.  There's not much separating Hot Tub 2 from Monty Python's Meaning of Life.  Other than the fact that the latter is actually a quality film, even if it's below the standards Python set with their previous films.  At the very least, some of the madness of this movie helps serve some purpose that might pay off later in the film.  Yes, it may be shallow and uninteresting, but at least there's something of an effort put in there to move forward in whatever absurd and sitcom-y form that may take.  That's about where the positives, if they can even be called that, end.  The fact of the matter is that this movie takes someone as talented as Reese Witherspoon and reduces her to, essentially, nothing.  Reese is a really fucking talented actress and while she does have her moments in this movie, if you didn't know who she was prior to this movie then you might not think she was very good.  And that's just shameful.  Honestly, I haven't seen enough of Sofia Vergara to determine whether or not she's a good actress or not, but she does have enough comedic timing that she's able to get by.  I remember seeing Sofia in one of the Madea movies, the one where Madea went to prison, and she was just dreadful in that movie.  Then again, that entire movie was absolutely awful.  But she was given a character that was clearly way past what she could do and it exposed her.  But she's got enough talent that she knows when to deliver lines and get them to be effective.  I'm assuming working on Modern Family helped her a lot with that.  But, really, the fact of the matter is that both characters are really poorly written and stereotypical.  Reese is the workaholic who hasn't found a man yet because she's too intense.  And Sofia is the loudmouth, Colombian trophy wife.  So to say that the characterization is unflattering and sexist would be a massive understatement. But it is what it is, this film was obviously never meant to be taken seriously in any way whatsoever. I just wish more effort would have been put into the comedy instead of relying on complete and utter laziness. This is a really bad movie, but I felt it was better than I could have anticipated. So I can't really recommend it in any way whatsoever.

I usually like Reese Witherspoon, but this movie was horrible. The humor wasn't funny and the acting was pitiful.

Silly and mindless but fun in its way.
