J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Joaquin Phoenix gives a rollicking performance as Callahan. Mar 11, 2020 Full Review Molly Haskell Film Comment Magazine If Phoenix doesn't generate much humor, he also acts as an astringent against the potent sentimentality of Callahan's Saul-to-Paul transformation and pilgrimage of apology, underlined by a heart-tugging Danny Elfman score. Feb 27, 2020 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard Basically, you can't take your eyes off Hill. And you get the feeling that Phoenix can't either. That gravitational pull is exactly right for the story. Rated: 4/5 Oct 29, 2018 Full Review Michael Clark Epoch Times A man disowned at birth drifts into a life of substance abuse, then becomes a quadriplegic, only to make a mockery of acceptable social decorum while finding roaring success as a member of the press within the very bastion of staunch Blue State territory. Rated: 4/5 Aug 12, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Dramatically and structurally, the film doesn't quite know how to feel about John's story, and while presenting them in confusing visual terms, it leaves the result admirable for its committed performances, but also something of a mess. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 11, 2022 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse A breezy, life affirming look at a man whose misfortune was his salvation. Rated: 4/5 Feb 28, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Dave C John Callahan wasn't really in my sphere of reference until coming across this biographical drama. JP is absolutely incredible in his role as Callahan, and really delivers believable addictive and self-destructive behaviours, whilst also bringing delightful dark shades of levity Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Ashley H I did get quite bored throughout the film. Shows us a lot about dealing with self anxiety and alcoholic, which was realistic. But not entertaining enough if you don't actually know John Callahan. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review Ted B Good performances from all, surprisingly engaging and not overly sentimental when dealing with difficult subject matter. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/23 Full Review Mick C I'm mega depressed now. This story was fun, highly enjoyable, depressing, and beautiful. Jonah Hill is the last actor I'd expect to see play such a beautiful role. I don't hear any one talk about this as one of his best roles, but I can honestly say it is! He was amazing as Donnie. Gus Van Sant directed a bunch of great movies in the 90's, and early 00's, but I never seemed to like some of his newer films as much. Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot, is easily his beat film since Milk. Joaquin Phoenix is just so perfect for any role he plays. I cried every time he cried. I laughed every time he laughed. He is such a phenomenal actor. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/29/23 Full Review Deb G Superb portrayal of a real life journey by Phoenix and Hill. The entire cast's performance was amazing. This is a must see when looking for a heartfelt movie.
