David Lewis San Francisco Chronicle As you watch the film, you'll be amazed how the world of the Internet turns the recent into the ancient: In a matter of only a few years, a world-changing digital event like Napster has become so last century. Rated: 3/4 Aug 1, 2013 Full Review Paul de Barros Seattle Times I found myself asking, "And so why am I being retold this hoary tale?" Rated: 2/4 Jul 4, 2013 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times As iffy as the coulda-been premise is, "Downloaded" is still a vigorous retelling of Fanning's and Parker's wildfire achievement and its ethical pitfalls ... Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 27, 2013 Full Review Allen Almachar The MacGuffin Narrated entirely through personal testimony, we're given a rounded perspective of the case, both by the people that supported Napster and [those] that fought against it. Rated: B- Jul 24, 2020 Full Review Brian D. Johnson Maclean's Magazine The film makes a convincing case that Napster was not just a delinquent site for music theft, but the progenitor of what we now call social media. Aug 13, 2019 Full Review Brent Simon Shared Darkness Downloaded provides a robustly engaging overview of Napster's renegade birth and premature death rattle. Audience Member Interesting look at Napster and it's effect on the world. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member As with Napster itself, the film feels a little dated. Technology has moved on from that time in the late 90s/early 2000s when Napster rocked an industry. It is nonetheless well polished and interesting look at how the industry changed and was forced belatedly to adapt to new customer demands. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Documentary about Napster and all the BS they told the record studios in 1999 has not changed. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Did these guys create the first free share of anything? Or the first prototype of itunes? Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member The music industry spent so much money fighting Napster and 15 years later they still haven't adjusted to the technology available. As for Metallica, maybe they should have spent their time trying to find out who leaked I Disappear, instead of taking it out on the fans that just wanted to listen to it.
