andrea d Paolo Barzman wanted to recreate a modern representation of Stevenson's masterpiece "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". I don't know if the director wanted a horror movie, or a thriller; the only thing I know is that the film is none of them. The problem is not related to scenography, music, nor the plot; the main problems of the film are two: dialogues and recitation. Dialogues are the most serious one. It seems very often that the dialogues between the characters have not been written to analyze their psychological depth and therefore make them evolve throughout the story; instead it seems that their only purpose is to create confusion in the viewer and they perfectly succeed. The sentences disagree often with each other; there are answers that do not make logical sense with the question that was asked and other things like that. However the recitation has an important role too in this mess. I'm not saying that the actors were not good; it is just like the actors gave their own version of the characters they're playing that are not too consistent with the story they are part of. The perfect example is Dougray Scott, who plays Dr. Jekyll. He's really good and it seems he really enjoyed his role, which is a fundamental aspect for a good recitation, but it's also like he saw in his character a more "nonsense" part, which should not belong to the part he plays. His ability to change personality during recitation, which is not common, must be appreciated, but we must say that his character is closer to a "Joker" than to a "Mr. Hyde". The madness that overtakes evil was not the right choice. Now let's talk about other aspects. A big round of applause should be given to the good work that the cinematographer and director have given to this film. Their work on lights and colours is very impressive. They played a real "game" to create the perfect dovetail between light and darkness to express the two opposite sides of the protagonist's personality. I also appreciated their good use of the so-called "Color psychology", where the atmosphere of the film is created by the dominance of a particular color in the shots. In fact many scenes seem to present the dominance of blue shades, whose purpose is to create an atmosphere of "cold" and "isolation" or "loneliness" which combines quite good with the story. However I don't think it was the wisest of the choices. In fact I would have chosen green shades, which are sinonimos of "corruption" and "evil", which suits really better than blue does. There is not so much to say about the plot: it works, entertains enough, it has holes and forcing but without anything so serious. The final scene is of course the most foreseeable scene in cinema's history, but this is not important, because it's like the film is trying to keep suspense until the end; even if it failed like an hour ago. It's not a film I would recommend to someone who's looking for a good horror, just to those who want to spend time entertaining themselves. Final mark: 7- / 10 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie was a lot better than I thought it would be going in. Dougray Scott is excellent and the cast is solid. This is a modern version so if you're looking for a period piece then pass it by. Definitely worth a look see:-) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Frances H Not a very good modern re-telling of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic. Frederick March, Spencer Tracey and Jack Palance have nothing to worry about. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/27/13 Full Review Audience Member Holy crap is this bad Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review austin v I love both the original novel and Dougray Scott (one of the most underutilized actors working today), so this dull stinker was doubly disappointing. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel is translated into a modern tale - again. Initially, the movie has an interesting feel, and Dougray Scott is far from the worst I've seen in the lead role, but it soon falls into a slow, predictable trot. The final act of the film is an annoyingly cliched courtroom drama, which I believe was one of the worst story solutions imaginable. Could have been interesting, but turned out a forgettable experience. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
