A film about what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button -- and it played the situation for laughs. U.S. Air Force General Jack Ripper goes completely insane, and sends his bomber wing to destroy the U.S.S.R. What to Know

Critics Consensus

Stanley Kubrick's brilliant Cold War satire remains as funny and razor-sharp today as it was in 1964.

Age has not withered that final queasy nightmare of the mushroom clouds, set to Vera Lynn's hopeful We'll Meet Again - underscoring how the certainties of the second world war ceased to hold their meaning in the nuclear age. Go to Full Review

Nothing would seen to be farther apart than nuclear war and comedy, yet Kubrick's caper eloquently tackles a Fail-Safe subject with a light touch. Go to Full Review

Kubrick has shown before that he is a director of rare gifts. Dr. Strangelove brings them into full realization. Go to Full Review

He would rather risk global nuclear holocaust than live in a world which compromises his manhood…. even if it is only compromised in his own mind. This brings me to why "Dr. Strangelove" is my favorite Kubrick film. Go to Full Review

Even the ending of the Cold War couldn't dilute this uncompromising satire's immediacy, not so long as men continue to think with their missiles instead of their minds. Go to Full Review

Timeless! See more Jack F @MovieFan111 Nov 27 I'm glad I watched it. Really famous movie. It was funny I guess. But why did Sellers play three different people? What was the point in that? IDK. Dang, that last scene... See more Couch P Sep 27 The film Dr. Strangelove, or how I stopped being Afraid and fell in love with the atomic bomb tells in a comical way about the events of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. This film is a black comedy that shows scary events in funny images and stories. The film is endowed with a large number of moments that show the comicality of this situation. For example, when an important call to General Baku Terjidson is answered by a girl who is absolutely incompetent in this area.Or Colonel "Bat" talks about compensating 25 cents to Coca-Cola for the destruction of their machine in a situation of a suitable nuclear war. This film perfectly shows the terrible events, the negligence and thoughtlessness of the country's leadership in the face of a possible devastating war. See more Read all reviews
