Cath Clarke Guardian An action-packed kids’ movie with plenty of PG-rated bashing and a real spirit of adventure. The letdown is some fairly average animation, and human characters that move like cheap marionettes with jolty limbs. Rated: 3/5 Sep 25, 2024 Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment A beautiful animation that is the perfect introduction to world cinema for children of all ages. The fantasy element is remarkable and opens up a whole new world that needs to be explored. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 2, 2025 Full Review Laia Cabuli EscribiendoCine ... Unfortunately, Dragonkeeper fails to forge its own identity that distinguishes it from the rest. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/10 Oct 26, 2024 Full Review Sandie Angulo Chen Common Sense Media Perhaps not surprisingly, given that the book on which the movie is based is part of a series, the movie doesn't wrap everything up too neatly. May 17, 2024 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix Dragonkeeper is a shoddy adaptation of Carole Wilkinson's fantasy novel of the same name. This animated film makes the story unfocused and bland. Most of the voice cast performances are stiff, with no real personality. They're just reading their lines. May 11, 2024 Full Review Mike McGranaghan Aisle Seat Sure, it’s a little strange hearing Asian characters speaking with British accents, but once you get used to that, the movie’s adventure delivers a good time. Dragon Lover I agree with other reviewers that it's not a movie for the younger ones. I liked it because it had dragons(I love dragons) and it's hard to find good dragon movies. It was paced well and it kept me entertained. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/08/24 Full Review Barb I took my grandson, age 7, and he seemed to like it but started loosing interest with 15 minutes to go. I found the movie very dark, both in storyline and appearance. Would not recommend this movie at all, but I think my grandson thought it was alright. I think he just enjoyed spending the day with grandma! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review Christina Dark, violent, terrifying for 7 year old Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review Fiona M The animation in this movie was really off putting for me, but the kids (6 & 8) didn’t seem to mind. I agree with the guardian review that the people moved like stiff marionettes. There are so many amazingly animated movies we’ve all seen these days that it grates when it’s done so poorly. The story was exciting enough. The characters voices mostly didn’t gel for me either. Again, kids didn’t mind at all. My 8 year old cried with emotion at the end, my 6 year old needed to hide his eyes with a cuddle from me when the spiders were attacking, but was ok for the rest. In fact he was busting for a wee but wouldn’t leave until the end! So actually they both loved it. I suppose that’s the important thing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review Branson D Got bored after five minute stopped watching (not good story) Update watched a bit more couple days later really don’t like it Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Holly l If you enjoyed the source material, then you'll loath the movie. As a child I loved the Dragonkeeper books, as well as the other published works by Carole Wilkinson. Wilkinson explored meaningful ideas, researched her characters and wrote purposefully. Each word in her books had impact and flowed beautifully into each scentance for young adult readers. The movie laughs at this idea of creative and thoughful writing, throwing continuity out the window. In the beginning, Ping is abandoned as a baby at a temple. Then (as if she needed a more tragic backstory) was abandoned again and given to an old woman to raise, getting her name from a amulet around her neck. In the books, Long Danzi (the dragon) tells the girl her true name, Ping, and asks her to accompany him to the ocean. In the movie, Ping seems to already have inate magic powers she uses, and discovers she's a Dragonkeeper through visions and lights. Dragon keepers are described as having "special bonds" with dragons. And that's it. Too much exploration! In the books, however, Danzi teaches Ping how to use qi (psychic energy) and explains to Ping that she is the hereditary Dragon Keeper. In the movie, Ping seems almost excited and nieve about her contact with the dragons and quest, all to ready to leave her life behind! Ping in the books was cautious, quiet, jealous and brave. She showed fear, as expected of a slave who will be kidnapped, poisoned and betrayed. If you ignore the British accents for a movie based in 141 B.C.E, Han dynasty, China, you might be able to also ignore the slow and clunky animation of the film. When you have solid foundation, don't try to change it, build on it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review Read all reviews
