Richard Brody New Yorker With its blend of historically accurate political debates and macabre mysteries, it plays like a fusion of Poe and Tocqueville. Rockthaniel H Wow, how am I one of the few people who hated this film? Let me explain: A pretty set design with famous actors doesn’t equal a good movie in my humble opinion. Not even Vincent Price’s best f*ing acting effort, and believe me he is clearly trying his best, can save this pile of cinematic trash from its poor script, plot, dialogue, and just baffling stupid writing and directing choices that just sink the entire film & reminds me why some old films deserve to languish in obscurity forever. So much of this film does Not make ANY coherent sense when you stop to think about what is actually happening in the context of the film for even ten seconds-like, let me give just one major example because it’s that baffling to me: (Also, Spoilers ahead just in case you actually want to watch this time waster movie before coming back to this review) Example one: What was the point or purpose of the Harpsichord Ghost? No, seriously, what purpose did this element serve to the narrative of the film? Because it is never explained and by the end of the film it is heavily implied though never stated that it is a drug induced hallucination, which I could accept as an explanation if it were not for the fact that the little girl can also hear the Harpsichord Music Ghost which was demonstrated in a scene earlier in the film and then is never touched on or spoken of by any of the other characters ever again. There’s also a maid who tells our main female protagonist about the Harpsichord Ghost earlier on in the film as well, indicating that other people other than the family members have seen or heard the Harpsichord Ghost at some point. This is never explained or touched on ever again in the film. At one point there is a throwaway explanation that only people of the family bloodline can hear the Harpsichord Ghost, but then what was the point of implying that the Harpsichord Ghost is a drug induced reaction then? Is it family curse, a mental disorder, a drug induced hallucination, or an actual haunting? Who Knows!? Because this movie sure doesn’t! And while I am fine with ambiguous open ended questions- the tricK about those is that you actually have to ask a question! And this film refuses to do that because it somehow manages to be frightened by its own meager intellectual curiosity. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Steve D Ok thriller with few surprises. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review nick s This period drama was a bit slow for me and I couldn't stop looking at my watch. However the production quality was great, with wonderful sets, costumes and acting. And the slow story at least had direction. Great to see Vincent in a movie that wasn't cheesy - his acting was impressive. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/27/23 Full Review j F Vincent Price is wonderful! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review joe m Almost true adaptation of the book, "Dragonwyck" falls in to the golden age of Hollywood gothic drama genre with a young girl, Miranda (Tierney) being in awe of a distant cousin, the wealthy patroon Nicholas Van Ryn (Price), who has her come live with his family to act as a companion to his daughter. Not as good as the likes of "Wuthering Heights" or "Jane Eyre", the movie has good turns by Tierney and Price. A cast of stars, some early in their careers, round out the film. Well worth catching, especially if you should have an interest in early New York State history and the Dutch patroons. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
