      Critics Consensus

Understated yet powerful, Driveways is a character study anchored in fundamental decency -- and a poignant farewell to Brian Dennehy.

grace h Lovely quiet family movie. Very sweet and moving. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Patricia P One of the most beatiful, well-acted I've seen in a long time. Highly recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Patrick D Nice story, completely spoiled by inappropriate sexual matter and language. Very disappointed Brian would agree to such content co-acting with a child. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/15/24 Full Review Alec B A movie with bottomless compassion for its characters and the audience. The story feels both familiar and new, probably because of the way it lingers on certain small moments of pain or joy. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Audience Member What a sweet little movie! Touching peeks at growing older; whether,it’s going from 8-9 or in the twilight years. .. and friendship. Gems of acting from all. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/07/23 Full Review Kevin L It's a sweet, quiet little film, "Driveways". Thinking about the title, it's a fitting one in the sense that the driveway is where we stop when we get to our home we have made for ourselves, but it's also what he cross when visiting/talking to/ connecting with neighbors. It's what Cody crosses many times to go hang out with his new buddy, Del, an old man now who was a soldier in Korea and married to his love Vera. The unexpected friendship between eight then nine year old Cody and the geriatric Del is one that both are better for. Cody is a small, sensitive boy, not like the bigger roughneck boys next door with their wrestling moves and aggressive ways. He learns from Del, like how to mow the yard on a riding mower and how people say things but it don't matter cuz he's a good kid. Del gets to be the grandfatherly figure he never got the chance to be, and it gives him some sense of purpose he had lost over time. His confiding to Cody that he regrets the things he never told his wife but wanted to, and doesn't know why not. It's one of the best scenes. The acting for the three main characters are all spot on, with Jaye, Chau, and Dennehy all giving performances that match so well in their light, delicate portrayals. It's quality work from the veteran Dennehy to Jaye in just his second full-length project. Chau, so great in last year's "The Menu", is impressive again here as a struggling single mother tasked with the overwhelming job of cleaning out the home of her deceased sister, a hoarder. Also, a shout out to Jerry Adler who is terrific as one of Del's long time friends who is suffering from dementia but most of the time is a happy, good-natured fella who can still recite his Cullen Bryant It's like a wonderful short story adaped for the big screen by writers Bos and Thureen then given life by the vision of director Andrew Ahn, who gets the tone and tempo right througout. 3.5 stars Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Nick Schager Esquire Magazine Driveways isn't simply one of the late Brian Dennehy's final performances-it's also one of his finest. Jan 27, 2021 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba What resonates is the movie's understanding of how we come and go through life, of how a house becomes a home, of how even the smallest acts of kindness can open doors that never quite close. Jun 5, 2020 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker The three lead actors carry the movie and do the heavy dramatic lifting gracefully; their sheer presence reaches far beyond the confines of the story.
