Chase Hutchinson Seattle Times A nonlinear exploration of a terrible tragedy that two families then try to pick up the pieces from, it’s a quietly evocative, constantly shifting film that ultimately sneaks up on you. Jul 29, 2025 Full Review Ryan Lattanzio IndieWire It’s one of those movies where the ground is ever shifting beneath you, as Bareiša replays scenes you thought you understood and recontextualizes them to suggest you perhaps never did. Rated: B+ Jul 18, 2025 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com “Drowning Dry” holds you at arm’s length, but I found it more moving—and unsettling—because of that. Rated: 3.5/4 Jul 18, 2025 Full Review Soham Gadre Film Inquiry Drowning Dry is a movie that is waiting to burst with its emotional weight but finds itself wafting. Aug 28, 2025 Full Review Andrea Schmidt MovieJawn The film rewards the viewer's patience with a piece of cinema that has a staying power that resides long afterward in one’s memory. Aug 19, 2025 Full Review Charles Mudede The Stranger (Seattle, WA) To intensify the experience of the modes (the casual-gradual and the intense-gradual), Dry Drowning, which is masterfully directed and performed, employs only diegetic music and naturalistic lighting and shot positions. Kevin L It's an interesting film, arresting at points when the more tragic events occur, but mixed with scenes of such natural, realistic interaction between the families. It is open-ended to a degree per what 'happens', or doesn't. I get the idea of how we recall and process the past, esp. tragedy (or near-tragedy); including how we can create scenarios where the details of a tragic event are changed so we can live with it. There may be some lingering questions for viewers if they don't follow it closely. The translation in English on MUBI has some issues ('standing' used for 'sitting', 'off' for 'out', for ex.) that could confuse some. Overall, fine acting and sharp, brave directing. I prefer the title they chose for the film in English. Seems more fitting for what Bareisa is going for. Bareisa holds back certain information. This isn't to trick the audience or to be overly clever, but to reflect with accuracy how shattering the experience was for the characters trying to move forward. He puts the viewer in their shoes. Trauma is like a tear in life's continuity. That tear can’t be just pieced back together as our mind keeps going back to the moment repeatedly as we look at it again, trying to make sense, until it all goes black again. Life moves on, but you don’t. You’re still back there where it all went wrong. 3.5 stars Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/25 Full Review Stephen C Success in 1 hour and 28 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
