Stylish, improbable, entertaining, superficial, well cast, and totally synthetic. Go to Full Review

Unfortunately, Rosenberg directs flatly, hopping from one set piece to the next, disjointedly throwing characters of varying interest across Newman's path. Go to Full Review

As a convoluted caper it generates action rather than character and surface mystery rather than meaning. Go to Full Review

The Drowning Pool lacks the freshness of its 1966 predecessor, though Newman can still trade quips with the best of them. Go to Full Review

It's not so much that the plot doesn't make sense - most good detective films don't "make sense" - but that you couldn't care less what happens to the people. Go to Full Review

Paul Newman undergoes all kinds of "games" in which performs with enviable ease, elegance and sarcasm. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Blu B Jul 18 Solid follow up to Harper that is well made all around. Newman is a bit more subdued here but good still. The cinematography doesn't pop as much as the previous one. It can be a bit dull and basic at times. Everything is more gritty and dull here vs the colorful 60's Most importantly though the underlying mystery is well made and makes sense. This one was maybe a bit more predictable but it still takes lots of twists and turns that I didn't see coming and kept me interested. If anything the biggest issue here is the direction isn't as strong, there really isn't much in the way of character development at all. Harper is still pretty much the same as last time. And it's not as fast paced as Harper was. But overall it works well still at doing the most important bits. Being a solid detective story and giving good execution. It has good dialouge too. This one is much more a straight dectecitive mystery than a Neo Noir like the previous despite still having hallmarks of the genre. It still has a complex plot just as involved as the first and can be a bit hard to keep track but I think most could follow as long as you pay attention. Anyone who is a fan of any actors here, the director, Harper, or 70's crime movies should check this out. See more Russ G May 8 A sequel to Newman's "Harper" - a film not good enough to deserve a sequel. What's a California private eye doing in Louisiana anyway? I just watched the original trailer and that was enough. Maybe Old Blue Eyes' charm could carry at the box office this half a century ago, but after seeing "Harper" I'm not hungry for more. See more CodyZamboni Z 07/06/2024 Solid sequel to Harper, but a bit darker in tone. Paul Newman brings his easy going charm and charisma to his private detective role, As he's hired for a simple case in Louisiana, And soon uncovers a lot more, As schemes for oil rich land, family secrets, affairs, and murders pile up, Fine supporting cast, chiefly Melanie Griffith, There's some memorable scenes, including one in a hydro therapy room, which gives the movie its' title, See more steve d 07/16/2020 Fun sequel that doesn't do anything new. Rosenberg's FLATLY performed directing, we thought the way Mr. P. Newman's hero ( among others ) makes another set of fine performances happen was one ( 1 ) ( i ) of MANY ways that this more than makes up for that.... See more Read all reviews
