      Critics Consensus

Dual brings writer-director Riley Stearns' signature deadpan style to bear on a smart sci-fi comedy that's well-led by Karen Gillan in double roles.

Mr. Hollywood A worthwhile passage of time. Really enjoyable because of the jokes and plot that comes out of left field. One after another. Love how the characters say what most people think to say but never do. Definitely worth a watch. 3 out of 4 stars Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/22/22 Full Review Len not bad, but did not like the dead pan acting. idk if it was intended or not. did not like the ending either. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/22/22 Full Review Brent Great idea, horrible execution. The movie lacks a point of any kind. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/19/22 Full Review John W A wonderfully grim, funny, and provocative sci-fi story that paints a subtle world that is devoid of human connection, making a base survival mindset actually stimulating. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/19/22 Full Review patrick The ending was bad. Movie was too short. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/17/22 Full Review M M I'm a fan of the writer/director of his previous movies but this wasn't his best work. By far. With one dimensional characters, the watered down the world building, and predictable plot points. The writing felt lazy. The execution felt flat. The only good thing about it is Karen's acting. The subtleties of each Sarah she plays is distinct and felt real. And Aaron Paul was so under utilized. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/16/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Alexandra Heller-Nicholas AWFJ.org For those of us for whom Stearns long ago won over, Dual is a satisfying ride that – while wandering into generic territory that is relatively new for him – shares his fascination with ritual and themes of individuality, connection and disconnection. Aug 11, 2022 Full Review Oliver Jones Observer Gillan imbues the two Sarahs with subtle physical differences that are consistently surprising. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 20, 2022 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It is very clever, interesting, and requires a real deep dive into one's own psychological dynamic. Apr 19, 2022 Full Review Damon Wise Deadline Hollywood Daily Stearns doesn’t quite nail the macabre mundanity of absurdist classics such as Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Lobster, but he gives it a good shot, drawing a surprisingly committed performance from Karen Gillan. Sep 16, 2023 Full Review Zach Pope Zach Pope Reviews I adored the deadpan, awkward, monotone delivery from Karen Gillan! Plus I love that the movie really touched into our insecurities as human beings. I was entertained but left needing more Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Manuel São Bento FILMHOUNDS Magazine Dual boasts an intriguing, high-concept premise that entirely commits to Riley Stearns' deadpan satire. But despite being full of purpose and intent, the latter component is taken to such an extreme that it negatively impacts everything that surrounds it.
