      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Duck Butter has a pair of compelling leads and a refreshing female-driven perspective, but its story is ultimately too thin to support a feature-length production.

Varun It had very good performances by both of the lead actress, overall the plot was interesting and a satisfying climax . But don't seem to have proper character arc, i recommend this a one time watch also the pacing is very slow so keep that in mind. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Cronis Really horrible, look Room in Rome Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/24 Full Review PridePosterStudios Not here for poomour in any shape or form. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Julio A Tem uma proposta muito interessante com alguns momentos de vergonha alheia. E claramente ficou estranho a cantora não ter voz.... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/10/23 Full Review Caroline I thought it really explored the 'are you crossing boundaries, or are you closed off?' question very well. I was constantly wondering throughout the movie what the 'duck butter' was that kept the relationship under tension, because I was always agreeing with a different character, albeit less and less. I also wonder if this movie was made to make men think. By the end, I was in a bad mood. I'm not always a fan of art that leaves a sour taste in my mouth, but it was good material nonetheless. I originally watched this to see how I like LGBTQ+ movies, and it turns out that some of the sex scenes impressed me. The fact that some people feel this movie 'has no plot' is kind of frustrating, because I believe the movie is supposed to leave you feeling like the relationship went nowhere. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member As the film began I realized this fulfilled many of my own more disappointing experiences, which sure, they understand a sense about lesbian relationships, a little too well. What little likability the characters have early on diminished by the second half. Tone is also a huge issue here, comedic episodes consistently end up feeling like drama. Heather Hogan Autostraddle The sex was good but the delirious lesbian mumblecore didn't leave a lasting impression. Aug 2, 2018 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker The director, Miguel Arteta (who co-wrote the script with Shawkat), finds no symbolic dimension or wider resonance in the schematic proceedings. May 7, 2018 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba What a feat for Shawkat in particular -- her myriad creative strengths are exemplified here, and I'm so excited for whatever she does next. May 4, 2018 Full Review Ben Turner The Pink Lens Duck Butter only succeeds in making its characters feel uncomfortably trapped in a pact of their own making. Rated: 2/5 Sep 1, 2021 Full Review Matthew St. Clair Cinema Sentries Both Costa and Shawkat have intoxicating chemistry that makes the film worth watching. However... even though the story is intentionally simplistic, it still doesn't have much payoff by the end. Oct 9, 2020 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review Duck Butter is an odd movie, anchored and made great by sincere and painful writing, as well as two superb, often quite funny and raw performances that are among the bravest I've seen so far this year.
