As expected, violence and mayhem ensue, but not without a healthy (heaping) dose of contemplation about the nature of violence. Go to Full Review

A livewire martial arts saga which is overflowing with inventiveness, framed in bold and bright colours. Go to Full Review

I went into the film convinced it was going to be just another bloody, mindless muddle. I came away not only impressed, but more respectful of the genre. Go to Full Review

Justin M. @McFlick5150 2d When I first watched Duel to the Death back in 2021, I was very early in my Hong Kong action journey. At that point I had really only watched one or two Shaw Brothers movies. The rest were all Jackie, Sammo, Yuen Biao, Jet Li and Chow Yun-Fat. So when I bought the brand new Duel to the Death Blu-ray released by Eureka, the only thing I had heard was that it’s great. So I sit down to watch it and it was completely different than anything I had ever seen before. With all the wires and jumping around, I kind of found it off putting and slightly annoying. Flash forward to 4 years later and I was a big dummy. This is a fantastic action movie. The fights are great the story while paper thin (aren’t they all) is still very interesting. I had totally forgotten about the twist in it and it caught me by surprise all over again. The only thing that holding this back is, it could’ve been longer! Not many times I say that. At 87 minutes it flies by and never fully establishes the characters enough. They’re there for the duel or to sabotage it. That’s it. I would’ve loved a few more scenes of Damian Lau and Norman Chui together. Or more bonding scenes with Lau and Flora Cheung. While the titular Duel to the Death is epic, it feels way too quick. Maybe Ching Siu-Tung wanted to make it more realistic and not last 10 minutes. Just feels like it misses a beat in there. Needed a second to breathe. But it is still a bloody great duel. See more 04/13/2013 To say that this is a good film would be a stretch. But it's absolutely golden if you love camp ninjas! American Ninja looks sane by comparison. Good fun. :) See more 11/25/2012 You can't go wrong with a film whose script calls for a hulking 12 foot Voltron-like ninja that eventually breaks into several ninjas (one of which is a completely nude female) just prior to doing battle with an elderly Shaolin monk. Tell us there is no merit in that even when "Duel to the Death" -- a ham fisted homage to two culture's respective martial arts cinema output and action choreographer Ching Siu-tung's directorial debut -- fails on so many other levels. See more 04/03/2012 Strange but very entertaining wuxia classic. Features a Japanese/Chinese battle plot, ninjas on kites, a nice helping of blood, and some amazing swordplay. Highly recommended.
