What to Know

Critics Consensus

A relentlessly stupid comedy elevated by its main actors: Jim Carrey goes bonkers and Jeff Daniels carries himself admirably in an against-type performance.

Ryan Gilbey Independent on Sunday What makes this fantasy of anti-social behaviour so painfully funny, is the gulf between etiquette and vulgarity, the desire to be a child whooping it up in the adult world. John Hilarious. They don't make them like this anymore. A true comedy classic! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/22/24 Full Review Erik A true classic, one of the best of all time. A pleasure to see in the theaters in 2024. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review Audience Member It’s been 30 years It’s actually fascinating how the Farrelly Brothers started here with their brand of comedy Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels play two of the dumbest best friends Lloyd and Harry The two men comes across a suitcase full of money and decide to go to aspen Colorado to return it But the woman has certain individuals attached to her which Harry and Lloyd run into Deep down though Lloyd wants to have someone special in his life and not be stuck with his best friend forever feeling empty Even they see their flaws in each other; it’s unlikely neither of them ever makes a mistake There’s goofy stuff going on but nothing knee slappingly funny I think this will be suited for viewers depending on your tolerance for the type of comedy There’s definitely a lot of sex and toilet jokes throughout; the most infamous one in particular actually had me smiling Think of these two as the live action versions of Beavis and Butthead Some of the story elements don’t gel together that well A comedy that’s just alright for the most part but focuses on the budding friendship of two lovable idiots jumpstarting their careers It’s very easy to see why people love or hate it yet it still tries to get a laugh in any manner having these two bounce from likable to unlikable constantly It’s success lead to a cartoon series, a prequel, and a sequel but doesn’t seem like any of them match this one’s comedic appeal Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Oliver L Some over the top humor and awkward moments but overall a good movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Orba B “Pretty Bird”. Jim Carey and Jeff Daniel’s stupidly hilarious joyride of a movie knows what it wants to do and delivers beautifully in this funny, nonsensical, Golden Comedy Classic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/03/24 Full Review Audience Member Dumb and Dumber (1994) is a comedic masterpiece that delivers gut-busting laughs from start to finish, cementing its place as one of the funniest movies ever made. Directed by the Farrelly Brothers, the film stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as two lovable yet hopelessly clueless friends, Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, whose misadventures take them on a cross-country journey. The duo's comedic chemistry is unparalleled, with Carrey’s over-the-top physical humor perfectly complemented by Daniels’ deadpan absurdity. What makes Dumb and Dumber so enduringly hilarious is its relentless commitment to absurdity. The dialogue is packed with quotable one-liners, and the gags—like the iconic “most annoying sound in the world” scene or Harry and Lloyd’s misguided antics with the briefcase—are laugh-out-loud funny no matter how many times you’ve seen them. Beneath the slapstick humor is a surprising sweetness, as the film celebrates the innocence and loyalty of its two lead characters despite their outrageous stupidity. The film also excels with its impeccable timing and creative setups, ensuring there’s never a dull moment. The Farrelly Brothers crafted a comedy that appeals to a wide audience, blending physical comedy, wordplay, and clever absurdity in a way that feels effortless. It’s a rare comedy that has remained as fresh and funny nearly 30 years later, solidifying its place as a cultural touchstone in the world of humor. For fans of comedy, Dumb and Dumber isn’t just a film—it’s an experience. Its genius lies in its ability to make you laugh uncontrollably while rooting for its two foolish heroes, proving that sometimes, dumb can be downright brilliant.
