Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times "Earthwork" takes an unexpected swerve but one that adds layers of meaning and emotion to a film that is as beautiful and wrenching as it is unassuming. Rated: 4/5 May 19, 2011 Full Review Chuck Bowen Slant Magazine Earthwork turns a potentially fascinating, infuriating story of failure into a dull, nave civics lesson. Rated: 1.5/4 May 9, 2011 Full Review Ronnie Scheib Variety Character actor John Hawkes, his rural demeanor tailor-made for hick pics, breaks through typecasting stereotypes in his nuanced portrayal of crop artist Stan Herd in Chris Ordal's ambitious Earthwork. Apr 29, 2011 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row It is a story that would have been better served by a documentary rather than the oddly uninvolving film it became. Rated: 2/4 Aug 5, 2019 Full Review Alison Gang San Diego Union-Tribune While we're grateful for Ordal's introduction to this atypical artist, the film's focus on the sentimental side of the story is at the expense of showing us enough of his terrestrial achievements. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 1, 2011 Full Review Chris Hewitt St. Paul Pioneer Press Hawkes is finally getting the great roles he has long deserved. Rated: 3/4 Jun 24, 2011 Full Review Read all reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member subtle, engaging, and shot beautifully...an amazing performance by john hawkes who proves he is a leading man. the director kept it simple and created a moving piece of art. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Very good movie, made even better by having a chance to participate in a Q&A with one of the producers. I look forward to more movies by this trio of KU grads! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member EARTHWORK was especially moving to me because I was raised in Kansas and moved to a big city (Los Angeles) to pursue art (acting) so I relate to the lead character, Stan, in many ways. John Hawkes was excellent as Stan. I had seen his disturbing performance in Winter's Bone and he was so convincing that I was pleasantly surprised to see him as a sweet, naive character. Now I'm convinced he's a sweet Kansas man! Sam Greelee and James McDaniel were also stand-outs. EARTHWORK to me was meditative, funny, and heartbreaking. A unique true story. Take the time to enjoy EARTHWORK. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved the movie and has complete faith that anyone that watches it will find inspiration! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautiful story about a real artist and his struggle to get his art in the public eye. Delightful cast, uplifting story, truly enjoyable. I especially enjoyed getting to know the rag-tag group of homeless guys that Stan befriends and recruits to help him realize his masterpiece.
