Virgo V @vision Jan 30 East/West is a 1999 drama film directed by Régis Wargnier, starring Sandrine Bonnaire, Oleg Menshikov, Catherine Deneuve and Sergei Bodrov Jr.. It received generally positive reviews from critics. The film was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 72nd Academy Awards. The film won Best Foreign Film at the 1999 National Board of Review Awards. It also won Best Film, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Music at the 1999 César Awards. Cinematography Some say the film's eye-level shooting made the viewer feel like a witness. Story Some say the film shows the physical deprivation and injustice of the Soviet system. Great acting in general by Sandrine Bonnaire, who as Marie, is totally credible. Oleg Menshikov, makes the best of Alexei, at times appearing uncaring and selfish, but who deeply cared for his wife. Sergei Bodrov Jr. is also excellent as Sacha, the young boy in love with Marie and swimming. See more 01/17/2010 As with most Russian films, I wouldn't recommend this if you are looking for a happy film. As it is, it's a good film, but a little too depressing for my tastes. It is powerful and true to life, and teaches about the horrors of life under Stalin, and as usual, Oleg Menshikov is amazing. Found that this is a powerful portrayal of love, history, humanity.. The dialogue switches between French and Russian.. cannot understand all but feel the tension with the good act and music.
