What to Know

Critics Consensus

The scenery is nice to look at, and Julia Roberts is as luminous as ever, but without the spiritual and emotional weight of the book that inspired it, Eat Pray Love is too shallow to resonate.

Rachel Kincaid Autostraddle Without discounting the importance of Gilbert's decision... it can't be removed from its context: it's a story about choosing self over prescribed generic femininity, a world of your own making over the deeply patriarchal American upper-middle class. Jun 9, 2021 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online An engaging but deliberate chick flick at times, Eat, Pray, Love has the quintessential chick flick star at the helm with Roberts, who played the role beautifully... Ace R It's a good movie. I liked it because it is thought provoking, and moving. I recommend seeing it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review Quinn R Like Liz, this movie was lost. She didn’t know what to do with her life, why she was on the trip and what she learned about herself, and neither do I. (38%) Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Audience Member The prequel to Live Laugh Love. Despite having a surprisingly stacked cast and the budget to film on location across the world, it only results in a bland vanilla self-discovery film. Julia Roberts as Liz Gilbert is a white savior first-ballot Hall of Famer, going 3/3 when it comes to “enlightening” or “enriching” the people in the countries she travels to. Ryan Murphy should stick to working his voodoo on TV shows as this film’s structure and pacing is a hot mess, that ironically would’ve probably worked better as a television miniseries. Too much material from the original memoir was attempted to be crammed into a film, resulting in it feeling rushed and not allowing the viewer enough time to grow attached to any of the supporting characters. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review Chloe A This movie; key word "attempts", to create meaning, but is really let down by messy direction and lousy screenwriting. Such a talented lead, Julia Roberts, wasted by the missed potential and the boring, long beginning that just felt like an eternity. I must say though, the cultural aspects of this movie were impressive and fun to watch, everything else is forgettable and quite frankly you can miss this Julia Roberts' movie out... Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Susan G An excellent movie that moves you, sheds light, relatable, thought provoking ... including the parts we might not wish for. Julia does an amazing portrayal of the main character. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Aleksandra S my forever go to in tough times.
