What to Know

Critics Consensus

The scenery is nice to look at, and Julia Roberts is as luminous as ever, but without the spiritual and emotional weight of the book that inspired it, Eat Pray Love is too shallow to resonate.

Without discounting the importance of Gilbert's decision... it can't be removed from its context: it's a story about choosing self over prescribed generic femininity, a world of your own making over the deeply patriarchal American upper-middle class. Go to Full Review

An engaging but deliberate chick flick at times, Eat, Pray, Love has the quintessential chick flick star at the helm with Roberts, who played the role beautifully... Go to Full Review

A tiresome, humourless, lifeless, overlong dirge in which the lofty pretention to say something deep about the quest for self and the female condition all gets blown away by an insipid, off-the-shelf romantic-movie ending. Go to Full Review

There’s some love along the way, and a little bit of praying, but it’s the “Eat” in the title that gets the most attention, like a neon sign in the window of an all-night diner. Go to Full Review

Unlike the original source, Eat Pray Love presents a flawless caricature that's on an idyllic, hiccup-free trip in a world full of kind people who are happy to be at the mercy of this lost American tourist. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Ramandeep S @RamanDSingh 2d Just finished watching Eat Pray Love, and it felt like a canvas painted with the many colors of life and emotion. Julia Roberts was truly amazing. Despite the low reviews, this movie clearly isn’t meant for everyone—and that’s okay. A must-watch if you love reading books, listening to music, watching sunsets, and giving yourself a soothing, calm, and thoughtful treat. See more Michael C Nov 6 Meh 😑 it doesn’t seem realistic. Not many can afford to up and take off on an extended vacation to find themselves. Also the wedding scene when they played a lousy pop song over traditional Indian music was totally unnecessary. See more Aluna U Sep 30 Eat Pray Love presents a promising story about self-discovery after divorce, but it lacks emotional depth in portraying the essence of each chapter—eating, praying, and loving. While the exotic locations offer visual beauty, the film fails to fully explore their cultural and emotional significance. Despite decent performances, the storytelling feels shallow and leaves little lasting impact.
