Recorded in front of a live audience in New York City, this film features actor/comedian Eddie Murphy performing a scathing comedy routine. Eddie's uncle (Samuel L. Jackson) and other family members are lampooned in sketch segments, while Murphy largely sticks to stand-up, riffing on fellow black comedians, marriage and various racial and ethnic stereotypes, among many other topics. The concert is particularly renowned for Murphy's liberal and unrepentant use of expletives.

Like its title suggests, Eddie Murphy Raw is a searingly unbridled and viciously funny showcase from one of comedy's best.

Henry Sheehan Chicago Reader In other words, it is just conventional TV-style shooting. Which is appropriate, I guess, for a comedian who seems to get most of his ideas about life from the mass media. Rated: 1/4 May 10, 2022 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out It's impossible to deny the virtuosity of his non-stop delivery, but the relentless macho onslaught sadly lacks the saving grace of Richard Pryor's self-irony. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Nell Minow Movie Mom Rated: 3/5 Dec 21, 2005 Full Review Sean L. McCarthy Decider This is a classic that somehow has only gained more relevance despite Murphy not touring as a stand-up for more than three decades now. Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Eddie Murphy was one of the hottest tickets in comedy in the 1980s and while he puts on a show in Eddie Murphy Raw, there's a good amount that doesn't age well in 2024. Rated: 3/5 Jan 29, 2024 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Raw is a cornucopia of perverse humor which leaves every puppet without a head. Tabitha B Comedy classic right here Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Feels like a 90 minute ride at 100mph with Eddie Murphy and his inimitable manic energy in the driver's seat for the duration. While the humor isn't as laugh out loud for me watching today there are still plenty of hilarious bits and impersonations that leave me in awe of how Murphy is constantly firing on all cylinders, operating at a ten this entire special, with very few pauses even for breath. Samuel L. Jackson Binge: Couldn't even remember an opportunity for another actor to appear in this until turning it on and realizing there was a short intro before the standup began. Eddie, as a young child, regaled his horrified family with a comedy routine centering on bathroom humor at a get together and Jackson, playing Murphy's uncle, was the only relative to laugh, doing so uproariously as the rest of the family looked on in shock. SLJ January #62 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Rewatching this for the Idk how many time. And I'm still laughing at "But what have you done for me lately." 2 days after revisiting the special. This guy truly is a genius of comedy! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member It was okay lots of laughter!! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review yash b I have always been a fan of Eddie Murphy. He is one of the strongest comedic voices of all time and his special from 1982, "Delirious," is among my favorite stand up specials of all time. This 90-minute movie does feel a little long but is often very funny. I do feel it's not nearly as good as "Delirious" but it's funny if you like Murphy's high energy comedy. I laughed a good amount and think as a whole this is a fun experience. Ultimately its a piece of stand up comedy history that I enjoyed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Paul K I remember seeing this when I was young that it was great. Watched it recently, not quite as funny as I remember. Like towards the end it really lags. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/19/19 Full Review Read all reviews
