What to Know

Critics Consensus

A brutal and effective British hoodie-horror that, despite the clichés, stays on the right side of scary.

Dennis Harvey Variety An effectively harrowing Brit thriller-cum-horror pic whose yuppie protags' weekend getaway runs violently afoul of the local youth. Nov 3, 2008 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard It is impossible not to admire the way Watkins ratchets up the tension in his debut as director (he wrote My Little Eye) and keeps his tale strictly to 90 minutes. Rated: 3/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Metro Newspaper (UK) It's the latest proof that, when it comes to scary movies at least, the British film industry is alive and screaming. Rated: 4/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Joe Muldoon Battle Royale With Cheese To call Eden Lake ‘bleak’ would be to undersell it. Characters and audience alike, very little reprieve is offered from the lurking terror, the tension often hitting the ceiling but never settling back onto the floor. Nov 27, 2023 Full Review Kristy Strouse Wonderfully Weird and Horrifying A survival thriller with no shortage of cringe inducing moments, Eden Lake hurts to watch at times, but the way Watkins creates such sustaining tension, is impressive. Oct 14, 2021 Full Review Alistair Lawrence Common Sense Media Strong performances from a talented cast help lift this British horror's so-so script to the point where it can be looked back on as an early outing for some notable British and Irish talent. Audience Member Don’t understand why people hate the ending. Although far-fetched in coincidence, it’s the best part of this flick (yes, this is a flick… not a film… not even a movie). Some “vacation”, camping on the dirt beach of a muddy pond. Dude way oversold that place, and didn’t even know how to pack an ice chest to boot. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review Zachary B Tense and foreboding all the way through. I heard about this movie for years, took the plunge, and will recommend to everyone. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Joe H Doesn’t make sense, from the plot to the characters and the environment they are in, none of it goes together. Which makes this film just violence for the sake of violence, don’t get it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/26/24 Full Review Mo C Not worth it at all, those kids are terrible and the couple is miserable, and? The only thing we get from this movie is an increase in blood pressure, nothing else. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/24 Full Review Zach G This movie is dumb. Not worth the watch at all. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/24 Full Review Aaron D Closer to a 3 than a 5. Frustrating and annoyingly verbose with a score that takes itself far to serious, you will find yourself constantly rolling your eyes senseless at the convenience, bad character decisions, and 'chance' encounters.
