A brutal and effective British hoodie-horror that, despite the clichés, stays on the right side of scary.

Dennis Harvey Variety An effectively harrowing Brit thriller-cum-horror pic whose yuppie protags' weekend getaway runs violently afoul of the local youth. Nov 3, 2008 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard It is impossible not to admire the way Watkins ratchets up the tension in his debut as director (he wrote My Little Eye) and keeps his tale strictly to 90 minutes. Rated: 3/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Metro Newspaper (UK) It's the latest proof that, when it comes to scary movies at least, the British film industry is alive and screaming. Rated: 4/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine This is grossly irresponsible, deeply unlikeable filmmaking. Rated: 2/10 Oct 1, 2024 Full Review Casey Chong Casey's Movie Mania [An] uncompromisingly bleak film about a vacation goes awry. Rated: 4/5 Sep 9, 2024 Full Review Joe Muldoon Battle Royale With Cheese To call Eden Lake ‘bleak’ would be to undersell it. Characters and audience alike, very little reprieve is offered from the lurking terror, the tension often hitting the ceiling but never settling back onto the floor. Jack M Terrifying and expertly shot thriller with horrific kills Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/21/25 Full Review Rich C Amazing Film! Loved everything about it from start to finish. What a ride. A must watch! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/15/25 Full Review adam s Worst film I think iv ever seen, don't waste your time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/12/25 Full Review Daniel Z Underrated gem and I love the twist on the end Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/05/25 Full Review Colette P Eden Lake falls perfectly into that category of films that are so relentlessly and sadistically disturbed yet deeply intelligent and thought provoking. It’s relentless in its depictions of violence towards the innocent but does so in a way to explore topics such as abuse, peer pressure, social acceptance, and of course, morality. The main victims in this movie, a couple on vacation, have enough charm and romantic chemistry that the audience cares about their fate and roots for them the whole way through. In other words, they are not just one-note nobodies to drive a plot. The film also offers us to look closer or even sympathize a bit with the antagonists despite their brutality. Both sides give utterly incredible performances (far above what is required for an indie horror film). It's the kind of acting that haunts you long after you see it. The film also benefits from it’s “day time setting” and summer like atmosphere. Like Texas Chainsaw, the opposite moods at play add to the disturbing nature of the story. As a horror fan and someone who's curious about more “extreme” movies, I was very pleased by this one. No elements about it feel exploitative or written just to be shallow shock value. The themes it explores have a clear artistic vision. This may be a hard watch for some, but it’s an unforgettable and powerful one nonetheless. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/31/25 Full Review Kaitlyn K This is my first time giving a review because this is the most stupidest movie ever! No moral of the story, telling us bad guys always win. It just gives tou bad influences, THATS ALL! dont ever let any crazy people watch this movie, it will increase the number of murderer in the world Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/30/25 Full Review Read all reviews
