Critics Consensus

A brutal and effective British hoodie-horror that, despite the clichés, stays on the right side of scary.

Dennis Harvey Variety An effectively harrowing Brit thriller-cum-horror pic whose yuppie protags' weekend getaway runs violently afoul of the local youth. Nov 3, 2008 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard It is impossible not to admire the way Watkins ratchets up the tension in his debut as director (he wrote My Little Eye) and keeps his tale strictly to 90 minutes. Rated: 3/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Metro Newspaper (UK) It's the latest proof that, when it comes to scary movies at least, the British film industry is alive and screaming. Rated: 4/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine This is grossly irresponsible, deeply unlikeable filmmaking. Rated: 2/10 Oct 1, 2024 Full Review Casey Chong Casey's Movie Mania [An] uncompromisingly bleak film about a vacation goes awry. Rated: 4/5 Sep 9, 2024 Full Review Joe Muldoon Battle Royale With Cheese To call Eden Lake ‘bleak’ would be to undersell it. Characters and audience alike, very little reprieve is offered from the lurking terror, the tension often hitting the ceiling but never settling back onto the floor. Ellee F Wth was that ending. Can’t get that time back…. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review Tulin N The movie is only good at being disturbing. Bad, cheap writing. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review John A Has to be one of the worst, most predictable movies I’ve ever seen. I was literally calling scenes seconds before they happened. Everything was just pure bad writing, from him driving fast through the woods with no lights, to her waiting all night and not getting help, to her giving her position away while watching her boyfriend as he’s tortured, hurting her foot while running away, crashing, ending up at the family’s house….just pure garbage writing. What a waste of time. I started skipping 10 seconds over and over the last 20min because I was tired of watching this awful movie. And this was the first movie under “most popular” on Amazon prime video…what a joke. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Vincent A Garbage. The whole movie is just a never-ending series of “out of the frying pan and into the fire”. Well acted. Horribly written. There’s no redemption. I waited the whole movie for the victim(s) to turn the tide, but nope. Everyone in the entire movie is part of this English hillbilly plot to kill the protagonist. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Bill W Disturbing, hard to watch, not for the squeamish. It's worth a watch but not something you will ever want to watch again. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/09/24 Full Review Alan S Dark and sadistic. Hard to watch at times At least they could’ve had a better ending. Made me feel like I wasted an hour and a half Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
