Critics Consensus

A brutal and effective British hoodie-horror that, despite the clichés, stays on the right side of scary.

An effectively harrowing Brit thriller-cum-horror pic whose yuppie protags' weekend getaway runs violently afoul of the local youth. Go to Full Review

It is impossible not to admire the way Watkins ratchets up the tension in his debut as director (he wrote My Little Eye) and keeps his tale strictly to 90 minutes. Go to Full Review

It's the latest proof that, when it comes to scary movies at least, the British film industry is alive and screaming. Go to Full Review

Eden Lake is an exercise in endurance. First, we endure extremely questionable decisions from the main characters, and then we must endure the consequences of those decisions. Technically, the film is well done, but why would anyone want to watch it? Go to Full Review

Vik D @vikdamone 3d Eden Lake is the kind of horror thriller that takes a peaceful getaway, throws it into a blender, and serves it with a side of pure dread. It’s brutal, tense, and brilliantly crafted, with every quiet moment making you feel like something terrible is waiting just around the corner. The performances are excellent, the atmosphere is suffocating, and the movie knows exactly how to turn a simple trip into a nightmare. A nasty little survival story that stays with you long after the credits roll. See more Damien S @Damien197384 Jul 12 Really good movie in my opinion Definitely worth a watch if you love really dark and disturbing thriller films…. See more Slick R @SlickReviewer Jul 12 I went into this thinking it would be as bad as Irréversible with Monica Bellucci, or even the crazy A Clockwork Orange... But it was not THAT brutal as there was no sexual assault shown. Kelly Reilly just gets beat up like she always does in her movies(10X10) and shows(Yellowstone). Michael Fassbender however got cut up pretty bad, but obviously it's just make up and fake blood. Everything I read about this movie was correct, zero plot, zero happy ending and there was absolutely no point to the story. One star for the bloody special effects. The movie portrays Brits in a bad light, so I'm not sure why the director got praised for being brave lol. See more Paul J. F @RT31168009 Jul 7 I hate this movie and I hate the people involved. This isn't art. I hope to see the director and screenwriter flipping patties at the local fast food joint. That's where your talent belongs See more Brent Y @RT95320193 Jul 3 Made an account just to write this. Eden Lake wants credit for being "brave" and "unflinching," but strip away the pretense and it's just 90 minutes of relentless torture with nothing to say. The "social commentary" defenders love to cite never actually lands it's lazy class-stereotyping dressed up as insight, not a genuine critique of anything. Every character decision exists purely to prolong the suffering, the villains face zero consequences, and the ending isn't "bold," it's just nihilistic for shock value. I didn't feel challenged or moved, I just felt exhausted and vaguely insulted that the film thinks bleakness automatically equals depth. Save yourself. As a fan of Michael Fassbender I wish I never watched this. See more Umut Kanyilmaz T @RT24580718 Jun 30 Writing this in the hopes to counter LOW IQ reviews making this a mid starred movie. This is an amazing movie, it makes you feel the THRILL and it’s realistic (situation + wounds). I love the ending, the directors clearly had such an ending in mind, it’s a preference and for realism that’s how it should be! MUST FKIN WATCH! See more Read all reviews
