Critics Consensus

A brutal and effective British hoodie-horror that, despite the clichés, stays on the right side of scary.

Dennis Harvey Variety An effectively harrowing Brit thriller-cum-horror pic whose yuppie protags' weekend getaway runs violently afoul of the local youth. Nov 3, 2008 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard It is impossible not to admire the way Watkins ratchets up the tension in his debut as director (he wrote My Little Eye) and keeps his tale strictly to 90 minutes. Rated: 3/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Metro Newspaper (UK) It's the latest proof that, when it comes to scary movies at least, the British film industry is alive and screaming. Rated: 4/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine This is grossly irresponsible, deeply unlikeable filmmaking. Rated: 2/10 Oct 1, 2024 Full Review Casey Chong Casey's Movie Mania [An] uncompromisingly bleak film about a vacation goes awry. Rated: 4/5 Sep 9, 2024 Full Review Joe Muldoon Battle Royale With Cheese To call Eden Lake ‘bleak’ would be to undersell it. Characters and audience alike, very little reprieve is offered from the lurking terror, the tension often hitting the ceiling but never settling back onto the floor. Yannis M A great film with an epic ending Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Kevin M This was overall very well directed with mostly believable characters and action. The acting was all very good, with Ms. Reilly as the obvious standout. But, I am pretty disappointed. SPOILERS BELOW: This film lost me with its ending. The whole thing is brutally bleak and really makes the viewer feel for what Jenny is going through and how tough she is to keep going and keep trying. And then it ends with the strong implication that the bad guys win and get away with it all. Luckily we do not see Jenny's final moments but this twist just turned me off on the whole thing. I understand the desire to present a film that does not end on a happy note but this was going too far. It makes everything we watched prior to that ending not much more than an exercise in showing a strong likeable character being treated horribly and surviving for no reason. This character that the viewer comes to like and root for gets a very dismal end just for the sake of a shocking ending that left me wishing I hadn't watched it after all. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review Geoff M More people should be talking about this film. Wonderfully executed Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/07/25 Full Review Robyn M Edge of your seat with a great ending Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/07/25 Full Review Wyndham M Once it starts moving, it doesn’t let up Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Menew A An outstanding thriller with a horrific outcome for the characters. One if my favourite of all time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/03/25 Full Review Read all reviews
