In 1839, Brooke flees Victorian England to explore Borneo. After a pirate attack, Brooke allies with rival princes to seize a rebel fort. To save prisoners from beheading, Brooke agrees to be crowned Rajah. James begs the Royal Navy for a steamship to fight pirates, but the British want his kingdom as a colony. Makota's pirates massacre Brooke's capital, leaving James half-dead. To save his people, he must shed Englishness and embrace the jungle: "All of it, the beauty and the blood."

Critics Consensus

Although it falls short as a biopic of the fascinating figure at its center, Edge of the World offers a visually and dramatically engaging glimpse of Victorian-era colonialism.

Edge of the World might work as an ode to bygone swashbuckling classics, but Brooke deserves a much more nuanced biopic. Go to Full Review

While it might not knock it out of the park, "Edge of the World" is still a very solid watch if a little slow-going and might also just inspire you to revisit some of the classics its indebted to which is its own small triumph. Go to Full Review

If the film can't help but feel like a relic from a bygone era, that's ultimately part of its appeal - the sun may have finally set on the British Empire, but at least it hasn't yet set on this mode of storytelling. Go to Full Review

A rare bird, not because of what it's like but because it makes you ask: why was it made? [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Despite the best efforts of the cast, Edge of the World rarely rises above a surface-level exploration of an iconoclastic, non-traditional English adventurer. Go to Full Review

The film [is] an unbalanced mix of narrative clichés and simplistic action-adventure dramatics that proves absolutely enervating. Go to Full Review

Jeffrey P 08/27/2024 Lacks depth and jumps right in and starts rolling... and not much happens on this tour through Borneo, until it is too late. It’s drama for the sake of drama; entertaining to some, a bore to others. See more Jerod S 08/09/2024 The British are taking over the jungle islands and Rhys Meyers is taking over the brutality of the tribes. James is king of a vast country, but you only see a couple of small villages and subjects. If you really fancy a jungle set movie, then give it a go, but keep your expectations low. See more Read all reviews
