In 1960, teen Lucien (Damien Jouillerot) is embarrassed by his father, Jacques (Jacques Villeret), who performs as a clown on street corners. Jacques' best friend, André (André Dussollier), defends the behavior, telling Lucien his father's conduct is linked to an experience during World War II. Jacques and André were part of the French Resistance and imprisoned and sentenced to death by the Nazis. But they were freed because of Jacques' friendship with a guard who often impersonated a clown.
