Eight Postcards from Utopia is a found-footage documentary assembled exclusively out of post-socialist Romanian advertisements. In bringing together these documents of Romania's long transition period, they are made to speak about life, love and death, about the body and human frailty, about nature and the supernatural, about recent history, and, of course, about socialism and capitalism. A film between found poetry and an outdated encyclopedia, between trash art and Summa Theologiae.

Baneet Sarai London Evening Standard The viewer has to work hard, and at times, it is a struggle to find a message at all, yet the film hangs together through its sheer ridiculousness. Rated: 4/5 Nov 5, 2024 Full Review Robert Daniels RogerEbert.com A mischievous piece of cultural criticism. Aug 29, 2024 Full Review Guy Lodge Variety Lingers in the mind as a sharp sociopolitical tangram that could be assembled any number of ways to differing academic and emotional effect: a vision of rebuilding or destruction, hope or nihilistic collapse, depending on what you’re willing to buy. Aug 28, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net This is more than a fascinating documentary. It's a time capsule worth preserving. A window into a period of European history that speaks to us all, even if its focal point is in a small country looking for an identity. Rated: 5/5 Nov 1, 2024 Full Review Milo Garner In Review Online Radu and Ferencz-Flatz have created a picture-book of ephemera; if they imply the function and feedback-loop inherent in the advert-form, they also document a period of visual culture, and the dream of a Romanian utopia. Oct 18, 2024 Full Review Daniel Allen Loud and Clear Reviews There is no corner that Radu Jude doesn’t cover in Eight Postcards from Utopia, with his acerbic touch shining through in a resourceful and head-spinning experimental film.
