Poor Indian woman Somna (Sadhana) works on a farm with local teacher Kailash Nath Kaushal (Balraj Sahni), whose wife died in childbirth. One of his students is Amar Kumar (Sanjay Khan), who meets, falls for and impregnates Somna. When Amar is thought to be killed while mountain climbing, Kailash steps in to be the baby's father figure and agrees to marry the unwed mother. But six years later, Amar returns to the village, hoping to step back into the lives of Somna and his child.
