Audience Member Overall decent film. The plot is kinda simple but an enjoyable piece of art. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautiful, reflective black and white French film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Serge L Believe it or not, the story happens during the second world war. The germans are not much present, but their influence is felt. Beautiful and intriguing story about beauty and life. God is proven in this film. I wonder if the story is true because the end seems a bit of non-sense, even though it probably means he accomplished what he wanted. It seems bizarre and out of character. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member I love Jean Rochefort, I love Claudia Cardinale, and I love Chus Lempeave. I am impressed by the beautiful newcomer who plays the refugee. I just don't like the movie, though Trueba is a favorite of mine. The story is predictable, the old man who is supposed to be full of wisdom seems full of hot air. I've just been reading about artists and the role of their models, and this movie doesn't seem to go very deep into the question. Claudia Cardinale is given a thankless job as a model who no longer inspires her husband. There is an attempt at a political subplot, at a German subplot. Jean's sculptor is no Robin, and the whole view of women is sadly limited: they are there to serve food, clean up, or pose nude. Oh yes, and listen to the men's wisdom. Disappointing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member My kind of european movie: simple, elegant, well-acted, and with an amazing cinematography. Stanley Kauffmann The New Republic This film has its own nature, almost its own reality. The sudden finish almost seems meant to make it our responsibility to comprehend the whole. Nov 14, 2013 Full Review Ryan Gilbey New Statesman What The Artist and the Model does boast are generous performances and the odd flash of inspiration. Sep 19, 2013 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) A whimsical black-and-white meditation upon the nature of art, set in rural southern France during the second world war. Rated: 3/5 Sep 15, 2013 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Whether it is intended as such or not, The Artist and the Model is a rebuke to much of what we see today in the art world, either open charlatanry or tiresome self-absorption and trivia. Feb 12, 2021 Full Review Joseph Walsh CineVue Trueba offers a great deal of charm, in what is a quiet, reflective drama. Rated: 3/5 Aug 23, 2018 Full Review Sean Burns Metro This is a gentle picture emphasizing discipline, hard work and patience. May 5, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews
