Sheri Linden The Hollywood Reporter One of the strengths of John McDermott’s film is that it breaks the rock-doc mold by not relying on a starry roster of talking heads. Aug 12, 2024 Full Review Caroline Madden Vague Visages "With 'Electric Lady Studios,' McDermott artfully explores intriguing stories about hard-working music professionals who experienced first-hand what it was like to make a dream come true." Oct 10, 2024 Full Review Stephen Silver Living Life Fearless Fascinating stuff, although I would probably watch another documentary just about the studio’s history and all the people who cycled there over the years Aug 16, 2024 Full Review Avi Offer NYC Movie Guru Mildly entertaining, conventional and forgettable. Aug 9, 2024 Full Review Edward Douglas The Weekend Warrior (Substack) I’m not quite sure how many casual music fans, even Hendrix diehards, will get much out of this movie. Kurt O Amazing story of a legendary recording studio through many challenges and set backs Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/26/24 Full Review Hlne1030 Very interesting and learned lots of new facts on Jimi Hendrix and his entourage. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/25/24 Full Review Jack Excellent documentary. Seamless joins the story of the creation of the studio with searing Hendrix performances. The talking heads throughout added great weight to the story. Highly recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/16/24 Full Review Saul This was a fascinating insight into how Electric Lady Studios came to be and the importance it had to Jimi. The memories related by the core studio personnel, musicians and others were captivating. Eddie Kramer's insights into Jimi's music, his vision for the studio and as a friend made this the great film I had hoped it would be. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Douglas G Paper Thin & Dull: A Missed Opportunity The film is worshipful of Jimi Hendrix to the exclusion of the incredible history made at Elextric Lady. Eddie Kramer and the original team are likable and provide good insights into the birth of the studio, but then no other voices pick up the story. Instead, we rotate through the same few people, sitting in same location, see the same vintage photos of the space during construction, and see the same few live clips of Hendrix performing, again and again and again and again and again and again… Only in the final minutes do we hear that Carly Simon recorded her first album there. We don’t get Carly, or any music. We just see the album cover 3 or 4 times. We learn that “Led Zeppelin loved it and kept coming back,” and get a quick flash of album covers of music recorded at the legendary place. We never see inside Electric Lady Studios, save for the same few still images of the wreckage pre or during construction. We never hear from other legends who recorded there other than the Hendrix team, and even Hendrix only recorded a few tracks before his passing. The history of Electric Lasy was made possible by Jimi’s vision, and he left us far too soon. But we don’t get the history of Electric Lady here. This entire film would have been a fantastic opening 15-20 minutes to what could have been a fascinating look at one of the world’s most legendary studios. The most obsessive of Jimi Hendrix fans will surely revel in the detail. But even they might find this all a little too thin on content. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/12/24 Full Review Read all reviews
