      Critics Consensus

Stonehearst Asylum offers over-the-top fun for genre aficionados; for others, however, it's likely to prove a dull disappointment.

Christopher N A beautiful, intense, and heartwarming and fantastical period drama about a small world that has been turned upside down. The movie does a fantastic job of showing the complexity of the characters, revealing the good and evil qualities in both the caretakers and the patients of Stonehearst Asylum. This gripping story gradually reveals many twists along the way that unfold during the story's telling, the best of which can be found right at the end. Highly recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Ezequiel T Great movie. Fun to watch. Well made Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/03/23 Full Review Regina P I liked the movie... I just don't like the fact that I can imagine this exact same story being elevated to even greater artistry. In the hands of a more capable director and storyteller with a better lead actor, this could have been Shutter Island. It could have been weightier. I thought the whole premise was great. There were no good or bad characters (at least the main characters). They were all a mix of good and bad. They all had good points. They all served a purpose in illuminating the problem. The film just couldn't help but to veer off to the commercial side, though. It could have explored more themes of mental health, sociopathy, dehumanization of institutions, etc. It was all there. And it missed. But just barely. I understood the themes, but I wanted the film to cut deeper. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/23 Full Review Larry J Stonehearst Asylum had the ingredients to be a great movie, but in the end it settled for just ok. Good cast, Kate Beckinsale, set in an asylum - how could this not be awesome? The story just did not have enough to be scary or mysterious. Ok to pass the time, but there are many other better movies out there. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/22/23 Full Review isla s This is a fairly haunting and atmospheric watch at times, with it being set in a large and dour building. It is a period drama set in the late 1890s and indeed there are some fancy costumes and uniforms on show. The plot itself I thought was interesting - I wondered what truths might be discovered. I also thought that Ben Kingsley gave one of the better performances, being quite sinister in his role as Silas. I wouldn't say its scary but its reasonably spooky and so I would recommend it, yes but not as a horror film, rather more a drama, perhaps with thriller elements. Mark Kermode Observer (UK) At best it's hammy, Hammer-ish fun, although it has none of the tension of Brad Anderson's underappreciated potboiler The Call, and none of the wit of The Ninth Configuration, which remains the best screen tale of lunatics taking over an asylum. Rated: 2/5 Apr 26, 2015 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) This Victorian-set horror film can't help but seem a missed opportunity. It has the ingredients for a lurid and entertaining trip to the dark side. Rated: 2/5 Apr 23, 2015 Full Review Kate Muir Times (UK) Stonehearst Asylum is a richly bonkers piece of Victoriana. Rated: 3/5 Apr 23, 2015 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It The film has an impressive cast and was quite entertaining to watch, although it wasn’t too suspenseful until the very end. Feb 22, 2023 Full Review Niall Browne Movies in Focus Far-fetched but entertaining, Stonehearst Ayslum is an enjoyable gothic thriller with a wonderful eerie tone which is assuredly directed by Brad Anderson. Rated: 3/5 Mar 21, 2021 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens [A]bounds with twists and turns set against a richly textured and lush, stylized Victorian-era visual palette.
