Elmer Kane (Joe E. Brown) is an arrogant but gullible baseball player who must leave his Gentryville sweetheart, Nellie (Patricia Ellis), to join the Chicago Cubs. Once on board, his teammates take advantage of his gullibility with practical jokes, and the management hides the letters that come from Nellie. When she comes to Chicago to see him play the World Series, a series of misunderstandings and bad judgments threatens to ruin both his love life and career.

If anyone missed the other performances of Elmer they may be surprised to find Joe E. Brown actually playing straight in this one; a task seemingly impossible for Hollywood comedians, but one which adds a great deal to the pleasure of the audience. Go to Full Review

James S 07/30/2024 90 minutes of my life that I’ll never get back. See more 03/13/2020 Funny, engrossing comedy with Joe E. Brown's actions and reactions the star of the show. Here, he is helped by Sterling Holloway, another rising star. Crowds clamored to see this movie in the midst of the depression, and it's a film that, with a few tweaks, would do well today. Joe E.
