Hedvig Jensen (Pia Degermark) has been performing as a tightrope walker under the name Elvira Madigan for years. When she meets Lieutenant Sixten Sparre (Thommy Berggren) in the Danish countryside, the two fall in love and decide to run away together. Sixten, an army deserter, has trouble finding work, and the couple face hard times. Then Sixten meets an old friend who questions his choices and urges him to leave Hedvig before their life becomes even tougher.

A masterpiece. The music and photography, the lightness of a true story which has the meaning of little revolution against any social convention. Working, buying and selling, social duties, social roles..and on the other side the flight of a butterfly, which is a perfect metaphor of a life deeply and shortly lived.

Heavy little movie. And definitely doesn't feel like a 60's film. Mid 70's definitely. Anyway, I cried. You'll probably cry too. Very effective filmmaking. Creeps up on you. Stick with it, even if the beginning causes you to roll your eyes.

Never before or since, has a movie so involved people that a CLASSICAL music piece famous in it's own right---becomes "Elvira Madigan" music--Mozart's 21st Piano concerto! SO there had to be something in it to involve the audience!

Synopsis
