Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Elvira Madigan is indeed remarkably beautiful, Almost every frame would make a painting, and yet the film is alive and cinematic, not simply photographs of pretty pictures. Rated: 4/4 Mar 4, 2019 Full Review James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk Widerberg succeeds magnificently in weaving an air of languid, poetic romanticism that is nevertheless punctuated at times with bits of harsh reality Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 6, 2023 Full Review Scott Nye Battleship Pretension With his first color film, Widerberg and cinematographer Jörgen Persson embrace the aesthetics of impressionist painters, creating a look much like that which Agnes Varda employed two years prior in La bonheur. Aug 31, 2023 Full Review Gene Youngblood Los Angeles Free Press That a film should not be well-made in this age of technology is flatly unforgiveable. Jan 31, 2020 Full Review Ken Hanke Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) I have no patience for the unrealistic and rather personality-challenged lovers as they cavort through sun-dappled fields. Rated: 3/5 Apr 13, 2011 Full Review Fernando F. Croce CinePassion Liebestod as a shampoo commercial Sep 22, 2009 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A masterpiece. The music and photography, the lightness of a true story which has the meaning of little revolution against any social convention. Working, buying and selling, social duties, social roles..and on the other side the flight of a butterfly, which is a perfect metaphor of a life deeply and shortly lived. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review Audience Member A beautifully filmed movie--very romantic. A good date movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Heavy little movie. And definitely doesn't feel like a 60's film. Mid 70's definitely. Anyway, I cried. You'll probably cry too. Very effective filmmaking. Creeps up on you. Stick with it, even if the beginning causes you to roll your eyes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Cinematographically and thematically quite lovely, but overall too boring for me. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Never before or since, has a movie so involved people that a CLASSICAL music piece famous in it's own right---becomes "Elvira Madigan" music--Mozart's 21st Piano concerto! SO there had to be something in it to involve the audience!
