I had to watch it a few times due to a fairly complicated plot. But the effects were done quite well and made me squirm here and there. I would recommend this to any fan of japanese horror. It was definately better that most of the schlock coming out of the asian horror market these days. The only setback was the OBSESSION with using the word embalming throughout. Every piece of dialogue seemed to be a diatribe on the benefits or drawbacks of embalming the dead. Still I recommend it to genre fans. This film rules. It's for sure for kids but the effects are so awesome. The story is quite intriguiing as well. Its a simple story that does a good job of blending the weirdness of alice in wonderland and the reality/vs dream state of the wizard of oz. I highly recommend this film to anyone who loves fantastical adventures like those two stories. this was a well plotted, well paced, story with stunning visuals and a clearly demented imagination behind it. I'm going to buy it. This movie was contrived even for a horror flick. The story was lacking. Predictable and the "Twist" at the end was another "been there seen that" kind of thing. I wouldn't recommend this flick to anyone but HARDCORE fans of the slasher genre. Be forwarned though, it is slowly paced, slightly annoying and as I said before EXTREMELY contrived. There is never really any kind of payoff either. This was an awesome movie. The cinematography was done very well. The directing was superb and the story was solid and engrossing. I would recommend this film to ANYBODY. Fans of the based on true events political thriller genre will for certain gobble this movie up. I was even impressed by Nick Cage an actor I'm not a big fan of. A fun kids movie. I laughed quite a bit. This film makes fun of the recent rash of superhero movies to saturate the market and does it well. Kurt russel does an awesome job portraying a superman like character. The plot is simple and transparent and contrived [the superkid who is the star gets his powers over the course of the movie and they come forward at JUST THE RIGHT TIME every time] but that is expected since this is a kids movie. Still it was fun to watch and I enjoyed it. You just have go into expecting very little and you will be surprised and maybe even laugh a little. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Though somewhat enjoyable, this movie is as dry as burnt toast. it moves along very slowly the entire movie. not to say that that's a completely bad thing, but it makes the movie a little hard to sit through. the things that this movie did get right, however, is the atmosphere and the characters. each character is beleivable, and never over the top. lines are delivered very naturally. if anything though, this movie should have just been called "search for the missing head". it reminds me more of a cop drama than a horror flick. if the movie vital is a 10/10, i'd give this movie a '3'. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting. I like the subtle visual style. A few too many familial coincidences for my tastes, but overall probably worth watching. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A lot of places will have Embalming classified as a Japanese horror and that is a bit deceiving. Director Shinji Aoyama actually creates more of a crime thriller with this movie.
The story is intriguing in the way that it is unique. The main points of focus are the art of embalming and a person with 4 multiple personalities. That is definitely a combination not seen in everyday movies. Anyway, this 95 minute production goes by very very slowly. There is major emphasis on story, with little in the way of anything else.

Long dialogue driven scenes fill this movie from beginning to end, which is why I mentioned that this is more of a murder mystery. There are no scares, however the few embalming scenes can be a bit queasy for the weak stomached. There are also a few shootouts, which seem unnecessary and unrealistic. All in all, this is a pretty uneventful film.

The acting isn't spectacular, but it is good. Reiko Takashima and Yutaka Matsushige carry this movie, while Toshio Shiba and Hitomi Miwa portray the more interesting characters. Long time director, Seijun Suzuki, also finds himself in the supporting cast.

It truly is the story and the meaning of love and immortality that are the highlights of Embalming. This is for people that don't mind enduring a slow, but interesting film.
