      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

With a bracingly irreverent approach to its story and Emma Mackey bringing Brontë vibrantly to life, Emily is a biopic that manages to feel true while taking entertaining creative liberties.

Cristina An absolutely beautiful movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/12/23 Full Review Mr. Hollywood Not a bad movie but it doesnt do much. They took pieces we know of Emily and created a fiction story that doesnt offer an excuse for this movie to really exist. Its not exactly a fun ride to excuse the pointlessness either. Youre left with a movie that didnt do much while watching it or afterwards, if you can even remember you watched it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/10/23 Full Review DS Nonstop maximum overwrought. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/05/23 Full Review Fran S So imaginative! Grateful that it was created. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/04/23 Full Review Steve G thoughtful, moody, dark - a little slow, but definitely watchable Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/23 Full Review constance m gorgeous photography, excellent performances, edited so it never/ever got boring like so many self-indulgent films these days get - by big time talents who should know better. And the sound design, elegant and perfect, with music as well as effects that only heightened the tension in scenes so beautifully conveyed with silent visuals of actors of great talent. First rate all around! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Rex Reed Observer Despite strong visual appeal and a star performance from Emma Mackey this rendering of the Brontë family saga gets almost everything wrong. Rated: 2/4 Mar 8, 2023 Full Review Colleen Morrissey Chicago Reader If one does not look to Emily to adhere too faithfully to historical truth or, indeed, to depict what actual writing is like, then it is a satisfying—or at least benign—story. Mar 3, 2023 Full Review Ty Burr Ty Burr's Watch List “Emily” is a good, engrossing watch, and it avoids most (but not all) of the genre’s pitfalls. Rated: 3/4 Feb 24, 2023 Full Review David Bax Battleship Pretension In the midst of the impressive gale of feelings and stylistic brouhaha conjured up by O’Connor stands Mackey, Emily‘s pillar of strength. Feb 8, 2024 Full Review Prabhjot Bains Tilt Magazine Frances O’Connor’s stunning debut finds poignant truths in speculation. Nov 2, 2023 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan Forlorn silences, haunting visuals, and awkward touches and glances make Emily a wonderful interpretation, if not, a reimagining of the beloved novelist’s life.
