This moody drama works better as commentary than as a compelling narrative: while it has fun playing with genre conventions, it never really provides a story that viewers can sink their teeth into.

With its fantastic wardrobe and sprawling set pieces, the film looks absolutely gorgeous. The creature design is fantastic and there are montages mixed in that set it apart from other creature features.
