There are few surprises here... But by the time it's done, you've gained a clear insight into the way racial prejudice can precipitate a rush to judgment by even the seemingly enlightened.

Emu Runner was clearly a labour of love for everyone who worked on it. It's a small film but one that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.

Thomas has made a deep, rich meditation on family, community, country and racial tensions that strides well beyond its girl-meets-bird logline. Flightless the Dromaius novaehollandiae may be, but "Emu Runner" soars.

[Rhae-Kye] Waites holds the film together and brings a lot of unpolished honesty to the role of nine year old Gem, and makes up for some of the more stilted supporting players.

The delicate direction by Imogen Thomas, who worked closely with cultural consultant Frayne Barker, occasionally hits moments of real poignancy and beauty.

Lovely thoughtful film that shows a family struggling with grief and loss. A nice thing to see an Aboriginal community depicted in such a positive way, with strong loving characters. I really enjoyed this touching film.
