Michael W This chess movie was pretty good. Rico Rodriguez, Efren Ramirez, Justina Machado, Ivonne Coll, and the rest of the cast did a pretty good job in this movie. This true story about an elementary school chess team in Brownsville, TX winning the state championship was dramatic and inspirational. It's about believing in yourself and playing as a team. If you haven't seen this movie yet, you may enjoy it. It wasn't very good, but it wasn't terrible. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/16/24 Full Review Gabriel Isaiah G Very cliche, Disney-film, and flat out corny. However, it does well within that lane of movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/14/23 Full Review Audience Member This story is about my school district's use of chess to motivate the kids in the district and get funding for our schools. It was a good movie but the way our town's culture was portrayed is just not real. It was too cliché in it's portrayal of life in a border town. It was almost insulting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Kinda like a college film project more than anything. Dud. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member AS A BROWNSVILLIAN, nothing hits home more than his movie! Even I found myself sitting at my school desk only to bed recognized as the little sister of the trouble making yet ALL STAR FOOTBALL PLAYER. I was never called by my name but by "his little sister". To this day I am nothing like him. Brownsville is well known for it poverty and immigration issues. We all know it. So when we are recognized for something positive we are ecstatic! I just want to thank everyone that was involved in making this movie. You showcased Brownsville in a wonderful inspiring way. I am proud to be From a town that, although we are bound to fail against all odds, we triump through the oppression. BROWNSVILLE IS THE ULIMATE UNDERDOG. Bill Edelstein Variety Carmen Marron's underdog tale of a Hispanic chess team makes too many predictable moves. Sep 25, 2015 Full Review Kevin Crust Los Angeles Times The otherwise congenial film plays itself to a draw because of flat characters and a script that overdoes the melodrama in the service of checking off a series of genre tropes borrowed from sports movies. Sep 25, 2015 Full Review Dustin Putman TheFilmFile.com There isn't a single surprising development or unforeseen story turn in "Endgame," and yet, as a study in formulaic Screenwriting 101 filmmaking, it's really rather pleasant and sometimes surprisingly moving. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 27, 2016 Full Review Sandie Angulo Chen Common Sense Media Inspiring, if cheesy, story about chess has tragic moments. Rated: 3/5 Oct 16, 2015 Full Review Dann Gire Chicago Daily Herald [A] staid but well-intentioned after-school special game movie that's been checkmated by clichs. Rated: 2/4 Oct 8, 2015 Full Review Louis Proyect rec.arts.movies.reviews A very modest film having much in common with the after-school Disney TV shows about kids and geared to kids. If you have kids that play chess, they'll enjoy this. Sep 25, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews
