Critics Consensus

It's narrative twists and turns hinder the effectiveness of its message, but Enemies of the State is a fascinating and timely look at the erosion of trust and truth.

Jacob Silverman The New Republic The result is an extraordinary, unsettling documentary that's just as much about DeHart's devoted parents-former Army linguists who became convinced of their son's persecution by the FBI-as it is about a young hacker and information activist... Jul 30, 2021 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times An exquisitely thorny investigation for these times, when transparency is most needed, obfuscation reigns, and our ability to process today's reality is more fraught than ever. Jul 30, 2021 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com What's true and what's not about the case of Matt DeHart gets hazier with each subsequent revelation in this too-often cluttered film. Rated: 2/4 Jul 30, 2021 Full Review Annlee Ellingson CineWomen Sonia Kennebeck’s documentary thriller Enemies of the State parcels out her discoveries in a manner that manipulates viewers’ sentiments about the situation. Jul 28, 2024 Full Review Josh Parham Next Best Picture The endeavor to craft a balanced account is inconsistently displayed, and despite the handsome filmmaking, leaves one empty. Rated: 6/10 Jun 5, 2022 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue It provides more questions than answers, but this documentary spins a fascinating true-life yarn about injustice, paranoia, dark secrets, and conspiracy theories. Audience Member The story kind of wanders a bit, but is a fascinating look into aspects of the Dark Web and government response. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Moderately interesting depiction of either a political target who is unfairly prosecuted or a pervert who takes advantage of his delusional parents. I was firmly in my camp by the conclusion but am sure there are others as confidently entrenched with the opposite view. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm sorry, 45 minutes in and it is not clear what information this person had that is causing any of this to happen. Hard to wait and care for so long. Poorly constructed. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Lol…wut. Total clownshow. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review greg r This could have been a 20 minute segment on 60 Minutes. It should have been. The ending few minutes are so important. Everyone has their own reality these days. No one trusts the truth anymore. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review avindu g People can have many perspectives until the problem becomes their own. From that point on reactions take identical approaches. So we can't judge the entrapped. Who is strong enough to stand against the colossus of states. Should we question? Is keeping secrets truly the loyalty? Isn't revelations of truth a way to express true strength and greatness of a nation? This is not a regular one-sided documentary but rather a spectacle of colliding theories and information chess game between govt and DeHart family. Justice is a inevitable either by law or nature.
