I was a teenager in the seventies and immediately recognized "Amanda Lear" as a top fashion model. I had seen her picture in "Vogue" and other similar publications. Never in a million years would I have thought she was a man. And, indeed, throughout the film she was maddeningly coy about her true gender identity. She claimed to have learned that it was beneficial to never actually tell the truth from her friend and mentor Salavador Dali. But the story unfolded in such a way that I believed by the end that she had been born male, and obtained gender reassignment surgery at a time when that was very expensive and rare. She worked, before her modeling break, at Le Carrousel, in the red light district in Paris. There she had a different name, Peki (forget the last name). She met and was best friends with the other transwoman profiled in "Enigma", April Ashley, a British woman whose story was far more emotionally affecting and who was much more open than "Amanda". Her vulnerability made her seem much more human and able to help other transfolks making that difficult transition. This film probably has a very limited audience, which is a shame, because it really reveals a side of life that many people can't even imagine. April Ashley attempted suicide twice as a young person, she was outed in the middle of her modeling career and so that opportunity collapsed, then she became a very successful restauranteur. She was very beautiful also. One could not help but feel that if only the world would be more accepting of people's differences, much tragedy could be avoided.
