In this true story, Fanny Kemble (Jane Seymour) is a famous star of the English stage, but while touring the United States, she gives up her career to marry wealthy American Pierce Butler (Keith Carradine). Moving with him from Philadelphia to his Georgia plantation, Fanny sees slavery firsthand, and her outrage leads her to help the family's slaves in open defiance of her spouse. Undaunted by the consequences, Fanny eventually writes a book that strengthens the anti-slavery movement.

Audience Member Better than average "movie of the week". Interesting and unusual story of the struggle for abolition and equality. Based on actual historical events and persons. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a good movie about Fanny Kemble (Jane Seymour) she was a english actress and when she toured in America she meet a man and they feel in love. She accepts his proposal. His name is Pierce Butler (Keith Carradine) and he has a plantation but he tells her the slaves has it good with him. When they have been married just a short while she notice a change in him. He wants her to not be as she are a strong independent woman. To make things better they have children. Things are ok between them. Then the children are some years old they decided to go to the plantation. She almost from the first day there helps the slaves. She fix up there cottage hospital and do a lot to help them. She meets the town doctor and he later tell her about Underground Railroad and she soon gets to help slaves escape that way. Her husband does not like her helping the slaves and want to punish one of the slaves when some of them have disappeared. She then throws her over the slave an take a couple of strokes before her husband gives up and leaves. When she publish her letter,that she has written to a friend about what have been going on,her marriage is over. This woman has lived for real and she helped people get up the eyes for what was going on.
