Critics Consensus

If its story's mysteries are ultimately less compelling than they might seem, Enys Men's retro aesthetic and intriguingly abstract visuals make this a chilly treat for horror fans.

Adam Graham Detroit News The tedious folk horror tale Enys Men is a case of plenty of folk but no horror. Rated: C- Apr 6, 2023 Full Review Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post It’s a fever dream in which the past and present are confused, along with plant and animal, the living and the dead, and, ultimately, the meaning of this troubled vision. Rated: 2.5/5 Apr 4, 2023 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com I was riveted by every moment of this haunting weird film. "Enys Men" made me legitimately uneasy. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Ian Bunting Daily Record (UK) Enys Men is a criminal mix of dull and confusing; if you’ve ever wondered what being stuck on an island with no phone, TV or internet would be like then this might be the movie for you. Sagnik Nath Nothing much to offer Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/23 Full Review Glafira Regina O If you're not a fan of slow-burn films, lack of clear answers, or anything remotely arthouse—feel free to walk right past this one. No point wasting your time. For the average “regular” viewer, this movie will likely feel overly dull and perhaps even meaningless. And no, it’s not horror, not mystery, not sci-fi. It’s a quiet meditation "on the waves" about memory and loneliness. But if you’re someone who appreciates film from the angle of cinematography, visuals, aesthetics, and mood—then it’s definitely worth at least a one-time watch. Mark Jenkin proves to be a rather promising creator. The film has striking visual compositions, a distinct aesthetic, and a solid performance by Mary Woodvine. It’s beautifully shot on 16mm, which only enhances the eerie atmosphere, even if the image is a bit fuzzy. Before watching, you should understand that this is first and foremost a purely experimental minimalist piece, and comparing it to most mainstream films isn’t fair. Enys Men is much more of a "feeling" with narrative hints scattered throughout than a clearly defined story with a beginning, middle, and end. For my taste, it’s a bit too vague, so I wouldn’t say I’m thrilled—but it’s an interesting experience nonetheless. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/17/25 Full Review Paul S This movie made me angry. Literally nothing happens throughout the entire film. It's clear that this was supposed to be an artsy film, but it did not resonate with me at all. The ONLY redeeming quality about this film is the cinematography, which was pretty good. Other than that, this film is just a waste of time to watch. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Chris B I love the way this film looks and I wanted to love the story as much, but alas I cannot say I did. It is monotonous, repetitive, and also very much a head-scratcher, but not in a solvable way. There's forming your own conclusions then there's this, which is forming your own stor out of fragments. I can imagine some people loving it though, especially if you can make the most of the complicated narrative, you need to test it out for yourself. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review Ben D Oh, to be on a secluded, British isle, making a pot of tea in a cozy cottage while wearing a turtleneck. Life could be worse. Or it couldn’t be worse, depending on what “life” is real and not real for “The Volunteer” (Mary Woodvine). This is another psychological horror (like Skinamarink) that is lots of style with little substance. Shot on 16mm, Enys Men looks great; it takes place in the 1970s and looks like it was made then too. But as far as a story, or even an experience, is concerned, the movie does that thing with psychological horror where you’re shown a bunch of characters doing weird things and disjointed timelines with little cohesion or satisfaction. It’s folksy, so you know there’s gonna be kids in white outfits, religious overture, and just like…stuff made out of sticks? Common in folk horror is that the land itself is an antagonist. It felt like it was headed in the right direction when “The Volunteer” stumbles underground, for some reason, and her image begins to violently shake. But then anything in that vein stops. Psychological horror is the abstract art of the broader genre. Sometimes it strikes a nerve and is exceptional, other times it’s a total dud. Like the gigantic gulf between the critics and audience (80/24), I’m much more with the latter. The most disturbing aspect of this movie is her dirty fingernails. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/24 Full Review Kyle M Scenic experimentalism is metaphorical expressionism only gripping the gist of the folk “horror” with an effective pattern that brews from questionably bland to something unsettling, enabled by the aesthetically stark visuals to colorfully saturate “The Lighthouse” surreal grip, nothing else.
